Many of you may have already heard, but we recently lost our oldest community member with the passing of Evelyn Shewell. Evelyn turned 100 years old this past August and was awarded with a proclamation from the Edinburg Ohio Historical Society.
This month, the Edinburg Ohio Historical Society attended a self-publishing class held at Books a Go Go in Ravenna.
Books a Go Go will have two more author events coming up, beginning with New York Times best-selling author Misty Wilson from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. Her newest title is “Falling Like Leaves,” which is a young-adult romance. Books signed by the author will be available for purchase.
On Aug. 30, I celebrated the Grand Opening of my bookstore in Ravenna, Books a Go Go. I could not have dreamed of a better day and cannot thank the members of the community enough for coming out to show their support. Thank you as well to the Main Street Ravenna organization and the Ravenna Area Chamber of Commerce for putting together a great Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
Several students from Southeast High School’s band and choir recently participated in the All-Ohio State Fair Band and Choir during the Ohio State Fair. Five of the choir members were also chosen to be Scarlet Singers and opened for the band Foreigner. Several alumni also made it back to perform with the band and choir as well.
True North Vacation Bible School at Edinburg United Church was a five-day success in early July. More than 45 campers learned about trusting Jesus through songs, crafts, games and Bible stories.
Edinburg United Church will hold its Vacation Bible School from 6 to 8 p.m. each night from July 7-11. This year’s theme is “True North: Trusting Jesus in a Wild World” and is open to kids entering kindergarten through eighth grade. Activities will include games, crafts and stories that point kids to Jesus. Edinburg United Church is located at 4081 Rock Spring Rd.
The annual Carl Wadsworth Memorial Day Breakfast will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday, May 26 at Edinburg United Church at 4081 Rock Spring Rd. Pancakes and sausage will be served on a love donation.
Pirates Promise Community Night Fundraiser will be held on Thursday, April 24 at Southeast High School to raise funds for Phase II of the elementary school’s All-Inclusive Community Playground. Admission is $5 to watch Administration and Staff take on Adaptive Sports Ohio.
When dropping off my recycling, I was pleasantly surprised to see a United States flag retirement drop box now located near the township buildings behind Edinburg Town Hall. If you have a flag that is no longer repairable, please drop it off to be properly disposed of. The address is 6856 Tallmadge Rd.
Main Street Ravenna’s Winter Writing Festival will be coming up this weekend from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 22 in downtown Ravenna. This year’s featured guest speaker is local author Julie Hatcher, who’s latest title, “Not Quite By the Book,” will be released at the beginning of March.
Southeast Youth Baseball and Softball are currently holding registration online at www.leaguelineup.com/seyouthbaseballandsoftball until Feb. 28. The organization is for boys and girls ages 4 to 14 years old.
The Edinburg Ohio Historical Society meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Edinburg Town Hall, located at 6856 Tallmadge Road.
Edinburg United Church, located at 4081 Rock Spring Rd., has been busy giving back and helping the community.
Edinburg United Church hosted 59 kids for Vacation Bible School this past August. There were 40 volunteers helping kids craft, sing, play games and dive into Scripture while exploring a friendship with God with a scuba theme.
The Edinburg Ohio Historical Society hosted its first guest speakers at its September meeting, held recently at Town Hall.
This year’s Portage County Randolph Fair runs through Aug. 25. Tickets for events are on sale at www.randolphfair.com. The fairgrounds are located at 4215 Fairground Rd.
