This Thanksgiving, Charlestown United Methodist Church is blessed to give back to the community by offering free Thanksgiving dinner bundles to people in need.
Charlestown residents recently participated in the “One Mile for the 22” walk. Spearheaded by Portage County Auditor Matt Kelly, the event is a one-mile walk intended to draw attention to the heartbreaking statistic that every day in the U.S. there are 22 veterans who lose their life to suicide.
Five townships. Five fire chiefs. Five fire stations. Finances so tight that equipment is often purchased secondhand and departments rely on part-time and volunteer personnel. Sometimes stations aren’t staffed at all.
It’s time to make plans to attend the 22nd Charlestown Summer Festival and Cruise In. Join in the fun on Saturday, August 2 from 3-7 p.m. at the Charlestown Township Park on Rock Spring Road. Admission is FREE and plenty of fun for all ages is planned.
Charlestown Township’s Annual Memorial Day Parade and Service will be held Sunday, May 25 with the parade stepping off at 11a.m. and proceeding to the cemetery where a short service will take place.

It’s Spring! That means that the Easter Bunny will be making his annual visit to Charlestown for the Easter Egg Hunt. The Bunny will arrive at the township park on Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m. to kick off the hunt. There will be a photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny. If the weather is a problem the location will be moved to the fire station.
Mantua Township road crews are out patching potholes and replacing and repairing street signs. This winter has been brutal for infrastructure, but the service is determined to get the roads back to satisfactory condition very soon. Preparations are also being made to get the cemeteries and ballfields spruced up for spring visitors and youth baseball, respectively.
The Charlestown Historical Society was pleased to recently host Tim Morgan, the State Environmental Supervisor, who has worked at the site of the Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant for 37 years. The topic of his presentation was “An Inside Look at the Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant.”
Santa Claus made his annual Special Delivery appearance through Charlestown this month. One of his stops was at the home of Todd and Suzanne Hurd.
There is a new flag pole at the home of Dale Nething just in time for Veterans Day. Last year, a big storm damaged his previous flag pole.
