Around Charlestown: Residents walk a mile for vets and Charlestown gets ready for fall

- Ruth Ann Bartholomew

Charlestown residents recently participated in the “One Mile for the 22” walk. Spearheaded by Portage County Auditor Matt Kelly, the event is a one-mile walk intended to draw attention to the heartbreaking statistic that every day in the U.S. there are 22 veterans who lose their life to suicide. The intention is to show support for our veterans and raise awareness for their mental health needs.

Matt, also a veteran, has plans to hold 22 one-mile walks in Portage County — one in each township and one in each of Portage County’s largest cities. If you are or know of a veteran with mental health struggles, here are a few websites that can help: http://www.mental-health-recovery.org, http://www.va.gov/health-care/health-needs-conditions/mental-health, Veteran Services | Portage County OH

Charlestown United Methodist Church invites the community and friends to come enjoy the Fall Fling from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. This outdoor, casual event was first held last year, and many came to enjoy food, fun and friends. Chili, hot dogs, beverages and dessert will be complimentary. Come gather around the campfire, enjoy a hayride, bounce house and games or a movie and friendly conversation. Come hungry and bring a lawn chair. The church is located at 6408 Rock Spring Rd. All are welcome!

Charlestown’s Halloween celebration will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26 at the township park. Residents are encouraged to participate in Trunk-or-Treat and arrive by 1:30 p.m. to decorate their car (decorations are optional). There will be a prize awarded for the best decorated car. The event features the BOO! Walk, a friendly, decorated walk in the woods where treats and toys are handed out. Plan to stay awhile and enjoy the free hot dogs, chips and beverages. It will be spooktacular!
