Kent schools levy passes; Streetsboro, Ravenna, and JFS all saw losses

Five townships. Five fire chiefs. Five fire stations. Finances so tight that equipment is often purchased secondhand and departments rely on part-time and volunteer personnel. Sometimes stations aren’t staffed at all.

The Paris Township Trustees are in the process of looking into joining a possible combined fire district that would include Charlestown, Palmyra, Deerfield and Edinburg.

The Rootstown Lions Club will be putting up banners downtown honoring local veterans leading up to Memorial Day on Monday, May 26. The banners will have the veterans’ names and photos on them.
In a 3-1 vote, the Southeast Local Schools Board of Education on Jan. 15 appointed Danielle Buckner to fill a seat recently vacated by Dave Fesemyer.
The Portage County prosecutor’s office has decided not to pursue a Deerfield Township employee’s allegation that a trustee had repeatedly subjected him to sexual harassment.

Deerfield Township Trustees voted unanimously Sept. 17 to terminate Brian Kelderhouse, a part-time firefighter/paramedic with the department, who was accused of sexually harassing a female member of the fire department.

At least 12 different schools throughout Northeast Ohio received social media threats last week, including one directed at Streetsboro City Schools.
A public hearing to air allegations of sexual harassment against a Deerfield Township firefighter/paramedic has been postponed at the request of the accused’s attorney.
Deerfield Township trustees are investigating two sexual harassment allegations, one against a female trustee and the other against a male fire department employee, according to complaints obtained by The Portager and interviews.

The bridge by the corner of Newton Falls Road and Holcomb Road has been closed by Portage County until a new bridge is built. Brick barriers were put up on both sides.
Among those votes were several surprises, ranging from the removal of several longtime elected officials, failed school levies, and the election of a township trustee who had been found guilty of embezzlement.
