Kent schools levy passes; Streetsboro, Ravenna, and JFS all saw losses

- Rachel Abbey McCafferty

The Kent City School District got a decisive win in Tuesday’s election, as its 9.8-mill additional tax levy passed 3,125 to 2,225.

It was estimated that Issue 1 will raise $8,522,335 annually for the district and cost property owners $343 per $100,000 of auditor’s market value. The continuing levy will begin being collected in 2027.

Without the levy’s passage, the Kent schools would have faced a $6.8 million deficit by fiscal year 2029, Treasurer Erin VanMeter told The Portager.

The Streetsboro schools, however, weren’t so lucky. Issue 2, the 7-mill additional tax levy for the Streetsboro City School District, failed 2,445 to 1,792. The five-year levy would have brought in $5,454,878 annually for the schools, costing property owners $245 for each $100,000 of market value.

Voter turnout on May 5, 2026, was about 27% with 28,368 ballots cast.

There were no contested local candidate races in the primary, save for a few primarily Lake or Summit County races, like that for the Republican nominee for the 13th Congressional district.

Full results, including for statewide contests and central committee contests, can be found on the county Board of Elections website.

Results for the rest of the issues, based on final unofficial canvas numbers, are as follows:

  • Issue 4, 1.5-mill renewal levy for Reed Memorial Library: The five-year levy passed 1,980 to 1,132 and will begin to be collected in 2027. The levy is expected to raise $489,542 annually, costing property owners just $28 per $100,000 of taxable value.
  • Issue 5, an additional 1.5-mill levy for the Community Emergency Medical Services: The five-year levy failed, 696 to 570. It would have collected $416,309 annually.
  • Issue 6, an additional 0.4-mill levy for Portage County Jobs and Family Services: The five-year levy failed, 14,779 to 12,753. It would have cost property owners just $14 per $100,000 of the auditor’s market value and raised an estimated $2,451,896 annually.
  • Issue 7, Ravenna City income tax increase: The 30-year municipal income tax increase of 0.25% failed, 1,120 to 699. The goal of the increase, which would have begun on July 1, 2026, was to fund the planning and construction of new fire, police and City Hall facilities.
  • Issue 9, a 2-mill renewal tax levy for Palmyra Township: This five-year levy passed, 294 to 182, and will support the township’s fire and emergency medical services. It is expected to collect $117,649 annually, costing property owners $36 per $100,000 of the auditor’s market value.
  • Issue 10, a 2-mill renewal tax levy for Palmyra Township: This five-year levy also passed, this time at 286 to 190, and also will support the township’s fire and emergency medical services. This levy will cost property owners $39 per $100,000 of the auditor’s market value and bring in an estimated $118,698 annually for the township.
  • Issue 11, a 5-mill renewal levy for Randolph Township: The five-year levy in support of the township’s fire and emergency medical services passed, 673 to 351. The cost to property owners is an estimated $111 per $100,000 of market value, and it is expected to bring in $662,410 annually.

Additionally, the Tallmadge schools levy (serving just a small sliver of Portage County) failed and a local liquor option in Deerfield Township passed.
