Vice Chair Sue Fields called a near-capacity room to order with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence. Tensions were elevated due to recent social media content regarding Joe’s Barbecue.
Dennis Cardello, a 40-year resident of Mumford Road, spoke for several minutes regarding traffic patterns on Mumford, citing county traffic statistics as listed in The Portager.
Chris Knop was officially recognized by Mayor Patrick for his long service to the Village of Garrettsville. Knop has held numerous positions in government, serving as council member, on the board of public affairs and the zoning commission, as well as many unofficial roles within the community.
Prior to the council meeting, new fire department hire Carl Bartlett was sworn in by Mayor Anne Haynum. Several of Bartlett’s family members were in attendance for the brief ceremony, and Bartlett received rousing applause from the crowd.
Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin delivered a report on the Maple Lane water line replacement.
Trustee Joe Leonard inquired about the status of E-Check in Portage County, a subject of interest for Pavliga. She has previously taken her opposition to E-Check all the way to Washington

After nearly fifteen minutes of debate, the trustees tabled the change of height from 40 to 60 feet. Several ideas were discussed, including conditional approval contingent on fire department approval.
The township received an offer on the recently acquired property formerly known as Windham Alloy. The proposed sale would allow the township to retain rights and profits to the cell tower on the property.
Rock complained about the delinquency of taxes not collected from the Econo Lodge in Brimfield going back to 2017. Rock estimates the establishment owes over $42,000, plus late fees.
There are several minor roads that show on township maps in the Brady Lake area that do not exist. The trustees are exploring options and will check with Brimfield, which recently vacated a road.
Annual employee salary increases were adopted. A contract amendment reflecting a 2% increase in the base salary of the law director was adopted.
Council Member Tom Hardesty laid out potential plans for road repairs totaling an estimated $240,000; council approved Hardesty’s request to seek bids.
A representative from the road department suggested filing a Lemon Law claim against a newer plow truck.
After ongoing discussion, the trustees voted to meet monthly instead of bi-monthly for 2024. They will meet again Jan. 17 to better prepare for monthly meetings.
Resolution 2024-01 was adopted without community comment, adding 80 acres to the current agreement between the township and the City of Streetsboro.
