So I’m right in the middle of reading Gerry Faust’s 1997 book “The Golden Dream,” detailing his tumultuous time as head coach at Notre Dame and the University of Akron, and it’s turning out to be quite the nostalgic experience for me — as well as a lesson in human nature.

It’s final harvest time at Kent’s Thomas-Anderson Memorial Garden, which provides bounty to dozens of volunteers, the community at large and Kent Social Services.
Congratulations to the Field Falcon football team on its 14-12 win over the Mogadore Wildcats on Aug. 23. This victory was monumental due to no Falcons win over the Wildcats since 2004.

Ed Limbach was five when his mom and dad took him to see the circus for the first time: the Cole Bros. Circus in Northeast Ohio. They got there early to see the crew unload the animals and equipment from the train and eventually pitch the big top.
The two recent floods have led Ravenna City Council to do an analysis of the city’s drainage system, part of which has been completed.

A few years back, I saw a comic strip that made me laugh out loud. It showed a person sneaking in the dark of the night to leave zucchini on his neighbor’s porch. The neighbor suddenly opens his door, rifle in hand, demanding that the man step away from his porch, take his zucchini and move on. If you have considered doing this with your excess garden produce, there is a better solution.

It has been a year now since my sister passed away. She had spent the last four months of her life being moved from one long term care/rehabilitation facility to another. It was during this period of time that our family became very aware and dependent on the Ombudsman program at Direction Home Akron Canton Area Agency on Aging.

I attended Erma Hoover’s 90th birthday celebration Aug. 11 at the Masonic Temple in Ravenna. It was such a lovely affair, with her friends and family attending. Erma was as gracious as ever and tried to speak with everyone there. She did a good job of it. Her family made all the delicious food, and there was plenty of it. Everyone had a great time.
The 2024 Randolph Fair is in the books! We hired Pete Kenworthy, a photographer and producer based in Kent, to document this year’s fair.
The 11th annual Rootstown Youth Football & Cheerleading Pig Roast will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Randolph Knights of Columbus Hall at 25 Teed Dr. The night will include a gun raffle, a 50/50 raffle, a Chinese auction, live auctions, side boards, side games and a liquor bar.
