No injuries after car rolls into Lake Rockwell

A car rolled into Lake Rockwell on Monday morning, resulting in an unusual scene but no injuries.

Streetsboro Mayor Glenn Broska said the male driver pulled off the westbound lane of state Route 14, at a 150-foot stretch where there are no guardrails.
“It’s kind of like an emergency pull-off, and he pulled in there, and that’s when the thing occurred,” Broska said.
“The thing” was the vehicle rolling down the roadside incline and into Lake Rockwell, he added. The Streetsboro Fire Department’s device team suited up and towed the vehicle out.
Streetsboro police identified the driver of the 2016 BMW as a 29-year-old from Ravenna. SPD Lt. Rich Polivka said the man placed a 911 call at 10:30 a.m., telling police he’d lost control of the vehicle and managed to exit it while it was still moving but before it landed in the reservoir.
The vehicle made its way down concrete slabs that the Akron Watershed Division placed by the roadside decades ago for erosion control, Polivka said, adding that in this case, the slabs acted like ramps straight into the water. AWD officials placed booms around the vehicle in case it was leaking harmful fluids, but later determined it was not, Polivka said.
“I’ve been here 30 years and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a car that far out in the lake,” Polivka said.
The driver was not cited for the incident.
