Ben Wolford’s thoughtful comments about “values that we should be able to agree on” reminded me of why I allowed him to talk me into reviving the Around Brimfield column a few years ago. Freedom, safety, respect, dignity, decency, diversity and seeing others as neighbors – I share those values and find comfort in knowing that most of The Portager readers share them as well. If we are to “hold the line” as Ben suggests, we cannot be complacent or naïve.

Brimfield acquires rest of Lake Mildred from Tallmadge

Brimfield fire chief faced firing in 2025, but landed a raise instead

Jan 16, 2026 - Wendy DiAlesandro. In May 2025, the Brimfield fire chief was on the verge of losing his job over complaints of shouting, threatening employees and dishonesty on the job. Instead of terminating him, township trustees in October suspended him for 10 days and offered him a three-year contract extension and a raise.

Dec 7, 2025 - Roger Gordon. Seth Dowler was promoted to fire chief of the Village of Mogadore after three years as assistant fire chief. His first day in his new capacity will be Dec. 27. Dowler is replacing John Cain, who is retiring after 12 years as fire chief and an astounding 44 years as a fireman in the department.

The township is done crack sealing for the year, according to Ruefner. He said that they were finally able to do some road mowing now that the political signs had been taken down. The road department currently has plans to complete some road ditching in the coming days, as well.

Atwater The Atwater Fire Department was an integral part of the “active shooter drill” that took place Oct. 31 at Waterloo Local Schools. Various departments and agencies were involved with this training/learning exercise. Meanwhile, Jacob Shaffer was recently hired by the fire department. While the leaves have not been as brilliant as in some past years, there is still plenty of beauty in Brimfield, and, for the most part, the weather has been pleasant. Nothing says fall like a 4-year-old picking out pumpkins at Dussel Farm on a perfect autumn day. My husband and I enjoyed watching Dylan McSweeney as he was laser-focused on filling his wagon with his treasured pumpkins.

Studies have shown that healthy democracies, where people vote in higher numbers, lead to healthy communities because elected officials are accountable to voters. I consider voting a privilege and a responsibility. It is my “super-power”! New “Welcome to Atwater” signs were constructed and installed on state Route 183 in the township by Eagle Scout candidate Jacob Simonetti. Boxed and Branded, owned by Joseph Simonetti, Jacob’s brother, donated landscape timbers used for the project.
