There were days when we all wondered if summer would ever come. Well, it came. Summer is in full swing, and my advice…wear sunscreen! Some may remember that “song” from the late 1990s written by a man named Baz Luhrmann [yes, the director] entitled “Wear Sunscreen.”
The first few lines are, “Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’97. Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.”
The song goes on to offer a long list of personal wisdom, and then ended with these words: “Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth. But trust me on the sunscreen!” [Editor's note: the origin of the song is actually pretty interesting.]
A few months ago, my husband had a very tiny spot on the side of his nose that would never completely heal. Since then, he’s had surgery to remove basal cell cancer, three reconstructive surgeries, and a myriad of complications along the way. Trust me…wear sunscreen!
Brimfield Food Cupboard
The Bike Rodeo that was sponsored by the Brimfield Food Cupboard with a NOPEC grant of $1,500 was a great success. Four TREK bicycles, along with quite a few LED bicycle light kits, were given away to some very happy children. Rodeo director, Dan Mars, expressed gratitude for the volunteers and community supporters who helped to make the event a great success. Business sponsors included Drug Mart, Mike’s Place Restaurant, RJ’s Auto, Eddy’s Bike Shop, and Knight Printing. Organizations that contributed included Portage County Health Department, Brimfield Police Department, Brimfield Elementary School, Brimfield Road Department, and NOPEC. Congratulations on a wonderful event!
The Village of St. Edward
Have you noticed how quickly The Village of St. Edward is being built? We recently attended their annual VillageFEST 2026 fundraiser at their Green location, with proceeds benefiting the VillageLIFE and Live Your Wish programs, enriching and enhancing the lives of residents. While there, we learned that about thirty villas will be built behind the facility for independent living. It promises to be a first-class place to live and thrive. The Village of St. Edward recently received the Locate Award from the Portage Development Board Locate, Stay, and Grow Event. They will be bringing 83 jobs into the community.

Finally, a fond farewell to Barbara Bryner, 92, who passed away peacefully in her home on June 24. She was the librarian at Brimfield Elementary School from 1973-1993 (20 years). Barbara was a charter member of the Brimfield Historical Society and a member of the Portage County District Library Board of Trustees for many years after retirement. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 10 at 4 p.m. at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home, 628 W. Main St. Kent, Ohio with calling hours from 2-4 p.m. I loved the line at the end of her obituary, “The reader has fallen asleep, but the book is still open.” Barbara has been an active and beloved member of the Brimfield community for many years.
