Documenters: Field Board of Education meeting for Aug. 10, 2026

- Noell Wolfgram Evans

The Field Board of Education held their regularly scheduled August meeting on the 10th at 7 p.m. Attending the meeting in the high school cafeteria were Treasurer Todd Carpenter, Board President Randy Porter, Vice President William Evans and board members Steve Calcei, Larry Stewart and Matt Slaven.

After calling the meeting to order, Porter led those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silent contemplation. The board then moved on to the business of the night. First up was the approval of the meeting minutes from two June meetings: the 8th and the 30th. They were approved without discussion. The board also approved the night's agenda.

Porter announced that Superintendent David Heflinger would not be attending the meeting, as he was out of town. With no superintendent’s report, Slaven offered a legislative update. The only item of note, he said, was SB 19, which passed before the Ohio Senate went out on recess. This bill would attempt to help boost math and English proficiency scores.

Next up was the Superintendent’s Consent Agenda, which Porter proposed for approval. It consisted of contracts for certified, classified and supplemental positions, along with transfers, resignations and leaves of absence across the district. The consent agenda also held first readings for eight board policies and the second reading of four board policies.

Also in the consent agenda, Heflinger proposed the removal of school fees, excluding extra and co-curricular activities. He additionally asked for approval for contracts to purchase ELA books, for pest control services with A-Best Pest Control and with the ESC for special services.

The board unanimously approved the Superintendent’s Consent Agenda without comment.

Carpenter next asked for approval of the Treasurer’s Consent Agenda. It held the financial reports through June 30, 2026, and the district financial forecast through 2030. Slaven noted that the financial forecast indicated a decrease of $4 million. Carpenter said that was when the levy would cease to be active, and Slaven questioned when they would need to consider whether a new levy was needed.

“2027 would be the earliest,” Carpenter said.

With that, the board unanimously approved the Treasurer’s Consent Agenda without comment.
Porter quickly realized that there was a person in the audience who had signed up to offer a comment, and so he invited Jerri Walter to share her comments. She said that she worked the back concession stand and that they got water there from a hose coming from central. She wondered if there was a timeline for a permanent water hookup to that space. Porter offered to look into it.

This prompted another member of the audience to ask if there was an update on what was going to happen to central. Porter said that plans would be discussed soon.

And with that, the meeting was adjourned at 7:11 pm.

Around Brimfield: Good friends make you happier and healthier

By Shirley Mars

It never occurred to me that I would someday have a best friend who is 80 years old. Last weekend I found myself at her birthday party, along with over 200 of her other friends. It caused me to ponder on the importance of friends in our lives. When I searched the internet, I came across an intriguing study on friendship and happiness.
