Exploring finances and footprints, Edinburg Township trustees are taking the initial steps toward building a new fire station.
"Our old one is just getting beyond repair, and some of it dates back to the 1920s," Trustee Chris Diehl said. "It would cost us too much to repair it and it still wouldn't be adequate for the modern needs."
The Davises built this pantry on wheels themselves in the wake of the pandemic and food insecurity crisis that followed. Known as the Rural Relief Mobile Food Pantry, their mission is to meet the needs specifically of rural Portage County, where pockets of the population experience the additional difficulty of living in a food desert.

Voters in the Southeast Local Schools district will not see Issue 26 on the November ballot after a unanimous Oct. 9 decision by the district’s board of education.
The former Southeast High School principal and an academic adviser are no longer employed by the district after a district investigation found evidence of alleged “sexual misconduct” that did not involve students.
According to a recent survey of Portage County by Flat Wireless, there are 2,135 houses with 6,142 people underserved or unserved by broadband internet service providers (ISPs). The bulk of these are in the rural portions of eastern and northeastern Portage County. Broadband Now, an independent ISP watchdog based in Los Angeles, estimates 12% of Ohioans do not have high enough speeds.
Edinburg Trustees are in the beginning stages of planning a new township fire station at the corner of state Route 14 and Tallmadge Road. It will replace the old fire station, which was built in the 1930s, with an addition in the late 1940s or early 1950s. The new station will be bigger and will be able to house all personnel and equipment.

The annual community Easter egg hunt, a fundraiser for the Palmyra Fire Department, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 23 at Palmyra Park on State Route 225. There will be games, candy and prizes. Also, the Palmyra Fireflies, which is the ladies auxiliary for the fire department, will sell donuts, coffee and hot chocolate.
A resolution was passed to have the Portage County engineer move forward with the bid specs to pave the mile-long Rootstown Community Park road, which is currently made of gravel.
Paris Township will hold its annual “Breakfast with Buddy” – Buddy the Elf – from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Shearer Community Center at 9355 Newton Falls Rd.
