The Portage County Board of Commissioners will hold a Special Public Meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26 concerning recent township board of trustees resolutions that request the board of commissioners prohibit economically significant wind farms, large wind farms and large solar farms within the townships.
- Roger Gordon. Mogadore Village Council, partnering with Summit County and the City of Akron, passed legislation to authorize the village engineer to prepare and submit an application for grants from the Ohio Public Works Commission.
- Roger Gordon. Seth Dowler was promoted to fire chief of the Village of Mogadore after three years as assistant fire chief. His first day in his new capacity will be Dec. 27. Dowler is replacing John Cain, who is retiring after 12 years as fire chief and an astounding 44 years as a fireman in the department.

Nov. 9-15 was Ohio Soil Health Week, and throughout Ohio there were events to honor the soil. Surprisingly, within a spoonful of soil there are more living organisms than there are people currently on this planet. As we enter this season of delicious festivities, may we be grateful to the farmers and soil microbes which make our food nutritious and tasty.

Atwater The Atwater Fire Department was an integral part of the “active shooter drill” that took place Oct. 31 at Waterloo Local Schools. Various departments and agencies were involved with this training/learning exercise. Meanwhile, Jacob Shaffer was recently hired by the fire department. Starting at 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20 through Sunday, Oct. 26, the railroad crossing located between 3525 Gilchrist Rd. and 3575 Gilchrist Rd. in Mogadore will be closed for repairs.

New “Welcome to Atwater” signs were constructed and installed on state Route 183 in the township by Eagle Scout candidate Jacob Simonetti. Boxed and Branded, owned by Joseph Simonetti, Jacob’s brother, donated landscape timbers used for the project.
Thora Green presented an administrative report that included the Eagle Scout project at the township property that would include a sign and flag to be erected by the end of August.

The 167th Portage County Randolph Fair will be all day from Tuesday, Aug. 19 through Sunday, Aug. 24 at 4215 Fairground Rd. As usual, there will be animal shows, animal contests, animal auctions, a demolition derby, live bands, karaoke, scavenger hunts, workshops, truck and tractor pulls, and a wide variety of food concessions. Atwater Fire Department Chief Jason Brock presented information on the increasing call volume the department is facing (there were 51 incidents in May). Data showed the need for the station to be staffed from 4 to 10 p.m. as this is the second-busiest call time after the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. time slot.

Once the calendars turn to June, the Waterloo Local School District will again have a new superintendent.
Mogadore will have its annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony on Monday, May 26. The parade will start at 10 a.m. on James Street by the Mogadore Branch Library and conclude at Greenwood Cemetery at 3809 Mogadore Rd., where the ceremony will be held.

The Atwater Township Clean-Up Days will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, May 2 and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 3 in the Town Hall parking lot at 1219 State Route 183.

Recently, the Board of Education allowed the Waterloo football team to place their equipment after practice in an unused visitors concession stand. The football coach began the meeting by expressing his gratitude, explaining how about two hours of labor previously went into putting all the equipment away in its previous spot.
The fire department thanked the community for the growing support for overnight staffing, as well as thanked Dale Wiley for a giant TV, and Milt Green for setting up the UH helicopter landing zone that was needed after a bad accident in the township.
