County roundup: Mogadore seeks grants for sewer project, plus news from Atwater, Brimfield and Suffield

Mogadore
Mogadore Village Council, partnering with Summit County and the City of Akron, passed legislation to authorize the village engineer to prepare and submit an application for grants from the Ohio Public Works Commission. These grants would fund approximately half of a $1.5 million project that would replace the water lines and sanitary sewer lines on, and would concrete and curb, Kavanaugh Drive, Kester Avenue and Curtis Street.
Village council passed legislation to give village employees a 3% raise.
Primetime Sports & Framing, a sports memorabilia business, recently opened at 3775 Mogadore Rd.
Brimfield
Brimfield zoning is working with the City of Tallmadge to obtain a portion of the lake at McGuire Park that Tallmadge owns. Tallmadge is giving the property to Brimfield, but Brimfield needs to pay for the replat. A purchase order was given to Campbell & Associates to start the work.
Pavlick & Reppas Oral Surgery Center on state Route 43 was approved by the board of zoning appeals. Mike Hlad, the economic development director and zoning inspector, is currently working with the property owner in completing the lot split and easements.
A new hotel is being proposed in the Highway Commercial District behind McDonald’s. The board of zoning appeals has approved the Conditional Use permit.
The proposed Fairfield Inn by Marriott was granted variances on the temporary fence it installed. The inn obtained building permits and is working on the new fire alarm system and redesigning the sprinkler system.
The township will be getting several new occupants for Brimfield Plaza: Wing Warehouse, All Pro Sports & Creations and Portage County Republican Headquarters.
Site work and apartment construction continues at The Villas at Wyles Farm on Town Square Drive. Several tenants have moved into the completed apartments. The county engineer has approved the public roadway improvements from tax increment financing.
Kenda Tire has completed construction.
The Woodland Reserve condominium development at 536 State Route 43 continues to construct townhomes and condos. Also, tax increment financing is being worked on to run water down state Route 43.
Pleasant Lakes of Ohio has been granted approval to continue with condominium development off Sanctuary Drive. The roadway is now in, and several condos are under construction. Also, the developer will start building behind the Holiday Inn. A zoning map amendment was approved at this location.
VA Cancer Imaging & Infusion Center construction has been completed.
Celebration Church purchased the property at 4494 State Route 43, and renovations will begin soon. The Cleveland Clinic will continue renting its space.
Joe’s BBQ is working on interior construction.
A new retail plaza is being constructed at Brimfield Crossing Drive across from McDonald’s. Construction on the building and site continues.
The Hill Church continues work on its new addition.
The old Rico’s Bar is being transformed into a restaurant/bar owned by KWT Commercial Real Estate LLC. The renovation is nearing completion.
The Schaffer Woods subdivision off state Route 18 has been approved by the board of zoning appeals and regional planning. This new subdivision will have 128 new homes and connect into Chapman Farms.
The Village of Saint Edward assisted living facility continues with construction of the building and site work.
Human Bean is interested in the old Van’s Tire property.
Plato’s Closet will move into 3975 Cascades Blvd., Units 8 and 10. Interior renovation will begin soon.
A mixed-use development south of Dunkin’ Donuts on state Route 18 is being proposed. Further information to follow.
Fifty-two zoning violation letters are out, and five are in court with the prosecutor’s office.
Zoning permit fees as of Dec. 31 are $79,287.80.

Atwater
Ashton Curtis was hired by the Atwater Fire Department as a certified Firefighter I. Curtis participated in the department’s cadet program and intends to further his training by going on to EMS school.
The Atwater zoning inspector’s office hours are 5 to 6:30 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month – the next being Jan. 13 – at Town Hall at 1219 State Route 183. The board of trustees will meet at 7 p.m. the same nights, also at Town Hall.
Suffield
The sixth annual Suffield Tour of Lights, a holiday community home lighting and decorating contest for township residents, was won for the first time by the Cook family (Garrett and Amanda) on Finley Drive. A trophy was awarded to the Cooks, who beat out eight other participants. Voting was done by Suffield dignitaries, each home that entered and Town Hall Administrator Shannon Eldreth.
