Around Ravenna: New Ravenna babies and a local’s trip to Ireland

I attended a lovely baby shower on July 23 for Meredith Litzinger. It was held at Byers’ Castle on South Prospect Street in Ravenna.

It was a perfect day for sitting under a huge tent to enjoy the wonderful surroundings and the good company of friends and relatives.

Meredith and husband Matt opened gifts for their new “little one” — and they had a lot of them!
It was a very enjoyable afternoon.

My friend Susan Locke recently returned from Ireland, and in her own words, this is her accounting of her trip.

“I recently returned from a trip to Ireland along with my sisters, Peggy DiPaola and Kathleen DiPaola, and cousins Linda Stern and Bill and Nancy Drugan. We went to visit places where our great-grandparents were born. We flew Aer Lingus from Cleveland to Dublin, Ireland. The flight took seven hours.

The first day took us to the town of Kells. There we saw St. Columba’s Church and tower. We met up with a cousin, Eamonn Drugan, in Enniskillen, where some of our great-grandparents are from. The next day, we went to Boa Island and the Belleek Pottery gift store, Classiebawn Castle and Glencar Waterfall, which was the inspiration for W.B. Yeats.

On day three, we went to Galway. We saw Leamaneh Castle, which is said to be haunted by the Ghost of Red Mary. The Cliffs of Mohr were a magnificent view. On day four, we went to Cork City, where another set of great-grandparents are from. We visited Ardmore, which is the burial place of St. Declan, who is believed to be the first to bring Christianity to Ireland.

Next we went to Waterford Glass and visited the factory, where we saw how they blew glass and formed it into the different pieces.

We visited St. Augustine’s Church and Blarney Castle, where some of us climbed the tower in order to kiss the Blarney Stone.

After visiting the town of Femoy, we went back to Dublin. My son-in-law is from Dublin, so while I was there I had a nice visit with his parents, brother and nephew.

Then it was back home. What a great trip, we had a wonderful guide, who showed us places you would never see on a regular tour.”

Before leaving for Ireland, Sue became a grandmother for the second time when her daughter and son-in-law, Meredith and Matt Litzinger, had son Wyatt Paul. The baby was born on Aug. 2, weighing 5 pounds, 11 ounces.

Her other daughter and son-in-law, Natalie and Francis Brennan, have daughter Mary, 5.
