Last month, a Portage County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a Windham women who had allegedly entered a neighbor’s garage with a gun. A Garrettsville police officer responding to the incident captured a lot of what unfolded on the scene because he was equipped with a body camera. Unfortunately, some details remain unnecessarily murky, because our Sheriff’s office has not yet acquired body camera equipment.
To raise awareness of opportunities to learn more about the meaning of Juneteenth, past and present, the Kent InterFaith Alliance (KIFA) for Racial Reconciliation and Justice has compiled a list of Kent area houses of worship that will be honoring the significance of the Juneteenth holiday during their worship on June 19.

Three 2022 graduates of Roosevelt High School can take some extra book money with them to college this fall, thanks to each winning a Kent Lions Club John Ferlito Memorial Scholarship.

The Theodore Roosevelt High School class of 1972 celebrated its 50th reunion June 10-12 by touring the high school building, paying respects to deceased classmates, and enjoying a reception and dinner, among other functions held over the weekend.

The 27th Annual Kent Heritage Festival will kick off at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 2. After the event was canceled in 2020 and scaled back significantly in 2021, this year’s event will be smaller than those in previous years.
Ravenna and Portage County together on Main Street in downtown Ravenna to showcase artists in the community on Saturday, June 11. Lined up along the blocked-off street, artists sold their work ranging from paintings to sculptures to quilt making to jewelry.

Head downtown for a series of free concerts throughout the summer at the Dan Smith Community Park. Local artists will perform on the park stage on Friday nights from 6-8 p.m.
House Bill 151 was passed at 11:15 p.m. last Friday. This bill infuriates me because it is tantamount to state-sponsored rape. The bill, which intends to allow for external and internal examination of the genitalia to determine whether a “she” was once a “he,” is intended to protect our sports from having people with excess testosterone play against other girls.
Shalersville Township and the City of Streetsboro have worked out an economic agreement that will prevent any possibility the township could be annexed.
