May 2 election results: Celko, Clapper win Kent primaries; school levies fail

The Portage County Board of Elections released the unofficial final results of the May 2 election, which saw a voter turnout of about 14% and a total of 5,029 ballots cast.

Here are the key results:

Kent City Council

Melissa Celko won the Ward 1 primary contest with 222 votes to Benjamin Tipton’s 179.

Jeff Clapper won the primary for Ward 6 with 166 votes against longtime council member Tracy Wallach’s 70 votes. Wallach was first elected in 2008.

Edinburg

A proposed tax levy for Edinburg Township passed with 107 votes to 19.

Nelson

Issue 2, a levy renewal for Nelson Township passed with 94 votes to 29, and Issue 3 — also a township tax levy renewal — passed by 58 votes.

Ravenna School District

The proposed additional tax levy for Ravenna City Schools failed with 934 votes against and 550 for.

Waterloo School District

The proposed tax levy renewal and increase for Waterloo Local Schools failed by only 69 votes with 797 against and 728 for.

Mogadore School District

The proposed tax levy for Mogadore Local School District failed with 657 votes against it in Summit and Portage County combined and only 258 votes in favor.

Mantua/Shalersville Fire District

The proposed five-year levy replacement for the Mantua/Shalersville Fire District passed with 508 votes over 230.

Nov. 9-15 was Ohio Soil Health Week, and throughout Ohio there were events to honor the soil. Surprisingly, within a spoonful of soil there are more living organisms than there are people currently on this planet. Atwater The Atwater Fire Department was an integral part of the “active shooter drill” that took place Oct. 31 at Waterloo Local Schools. Various departments and agencies were involved with this training/learning exercise. Meanwhile, Jacob Shaffer was recently hired by the fire department.
