Around Garrettsville: Time capsule opens, Curtains up Theatre opening night and more from Garrettsville

The Garrettsville Historical Society and Debbie Smith, Tim Smith and Denise Ellerhorst hosted the village’s recent Time Capsule Opening. With a stone note stating to open in 2024, they did just that. The time capsule was opened in front of a large crowd of people.

The contents: Cleveland Plain Dealer papers from July 1924, a book, a magazine, a letter and the Garrettsville Journal newspaper.

In attendance were John Porter, 94 years young, and Helen Danku, 95 years young. The historical society is preparing its own time capsule and invites anyone in Garrettsville to submit a letter about life in 2024 that future generations will read when the next capsule is opened. Letter submissions will be taken until August, when the historical society will seal the time capsule for another 80 years.


The Garrettsville Curtains up Theatre celebrates its 18th summer production with “Steel Magnolias,” with opening night set for tonight (July 12). Director Justin Steck is a welcomed face back to Garrettsville. The show runs July 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 7 p.m., with July 14 being the 1 p.m. matinee.

All productions are held in the Iva Walker Auditorium inside James A. Garfield Middle School. Tickets are available at the door: $10 for adults, $8 for seniors over 65 and children under 12, and $5 per person for groups of 15 or more, for the same day.

Those attending should enter through the middle school entrance due to the school’s renovation.


The Sip n Shop is just around the corner July 27 featuring several local wineries: Laleure Vineyards Winery, Nauti Vine Winery, It’s Your Winery, Salvage Winery LLC and West Main Street Winery.

Attendees will taste-test their wine selections while shopping among the numerous artisans. In attendance showcasing their crafts will be: Saxony Sky Vineyards and Apiary Artisan, the McCune Family Apiaries, Elaine’s Crafty Crochet, Celia Tench, Heather Prayner/Scentsy, Jewelry Designs by Margie Artisan, Origami Owl Jewelry/Think Goodness, Adustum Candles, Charlie’s Custom Creations, Treleen Heaton, Wild Primrose, JAS Wood Designs, Treasures in Glass, Ray’s Carving & Woodworking, Hippie Chic Clothing, Deanna Reed, Facet Salon (massages), Crafts-n-Knacks, Becca’s Blanket Boutique & More, Sparkle Sisters, Kensie and Bloom, Always Indie, 3 Dogs Kettle Corn, Yohman Jewelry, Stacey Bobbs Artistic Jewelers, Maia Bee Designs, Jon Sherbondy’s Woodworking and Village Emporium, with food by SummerFest Grille.

Music for the day will be provided by the talented and funny DJ Jason Adkins. The event runs from noon to 8 p.m. in the designated DORA only. Main sponsor: Facet Salon and Day Spa. There are still a few more Car Cruises coming to the Garrettsville area. The Garrettsville Chamber is hosting the following:

– July 20 from 5 to 8 p.m.: Back on Main Street with music by the Blue Cadillac Band.
– Aug. 10 from 5 to 8 p.m.: the Roger Angel Memorial Car Cruise and the Peach Social; location is at the fire station. Music will be performed by Dennis Chandler.
– And Sept. 2 from noon to 6 p.m.: the Zach Peterson Memorial Car Cruise at Nelson Ledges Race Track.
