We are halfway through August, which means it is prime back-to-school mode for many of you. Need a school supply list? Visit the Southeast Elementary School PTO Facebook page, where you can find them all.
Unfortunately, I do not have any information on how the teacher negotiations are going, but hopefully things will work out and the kids, teachers and staff will all begin school on time this year. If you would still like to get a sign for your yard to show your support, please message the We Support Southeast Teachers and Support Staff group on Facebook. They also post frequent updates such as the recent ice cream social held on the school lawn.
August also means fair time around here. This year’s Portage County Randolph Fair will be held Aug. 22 to 27 and the theme is The Place to Be in 2023. The deadline for entries has passed, but you can visit the website to pre-purchase tickets for admission, events and rides at www.randolphfair.com.
Southeast sports are also going strong with many already having matches. Golf, soccer and tennis are already underway. The first Friday night home varsity football game will be at the high school on Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. against Mathews High School. The stadium is located at the high school at 8423 Tallmadge Road, Ravenna.
The Edinburg United Church is also quite busy this month. They are hosting a yard sale on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to raise money to help a non-profit organization called CHARM. CHARM was started by Dr. David Snyder, chiropractor, to aid people and children in the Dominican Republic to help the citizens there to build classrooms and bathrooms in schools. The church is located at 4081 Rock Spring Road, Ravenna.
The Edinburg United Church is also holding its annual apple pie fundraiser. The proceeds from the pies are used to help people in need in the community when faced with tragedy as well as communities outside of our own. I can attest that the pies are awesome as I have been eating them for years and just placed my own order. They are frozen when you receive them with clear instructions on how long to bake them in the oven. Pies are available to order through Cindy Jarrett by Sept. 17 by calling her at 330-297-5825. Pies are $15 each and worth every penny!
Palmyra Township is going to be hosting an Open House Safety Fair at the Palmyra Fire Department on Saturday, Aug. 19 from noon to 3 p.m. There will be lots of things for kids and adults to explore including the station itself, trying on a uniform and spraying a hose. Free hot dogs will be available as well as games and prizes.
Special guests include the Portage County Water Rescue Team, GASP Program, Akron Children’s Safe Kids Program, Portage County Health District and the Portage County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit who will do a K-9 demo at 2 p.m. The station is located at 3956 State Route 225, Diamond. For more information, call 330-654-4098 ext. 214 or message on Facebook @palmyrafiredepartment.
Don’t forget about the 44th annual Ravenna Balloon A-Fair to be held Sept. 14-17. There are parades, vendor markets on Main Street and at Sun Beau Valley Farm, and the balloon lift-offs, weather permitting. For a full schedule of events, check out their website at www.ravennaballoonafair.com.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and don’t forget to send information to my email at [email protected] by the second Wednesday of the month to be included in the column and thank you.
