Here are the township and school levies on the May 2025 ballot

- Wendy DiAlesandro

Voters in two Portage County townships and five school districts will decide proposed levies on the May 6 primary ballot. All the tax levies would be effective this year.

A reminder: Additional tax levies are new requests that would raise taxes. Replacement tax levies replace existing levies and revert back to the voted rate, but are calculated on the latest property valuations. And renewals do not raise taxes.

Fun fact: The state lists five school districts in fiscal caution, watch or emergency. Three of the school districts, all of which have levies on the May ballot, are partly or wholly in Portage County.

Brimfield Township

  • Five-year, 0.95-mill renewal tax levy to fund roads and bridges. If approved, the levy would be expected to generate $262,000 annually, costing property owners $18 per $100,000 of assessed value.
  • Five-year, 1.9-mill renewal tax levy to fund roads and bridges. If approved, the levy would be expected to generate $546,000 annually, costing property owners $38 per $100,000 of assessed value.

Hiram Township

Five-year, 3-mill replacement tax levy to fund roads and bridges. If approved, the levy would be expected to generate $363,000 annually, costing property owners $105 per $100,000 of assessed value.

School districts

  • Aurora City School District: Five-year, 5.61-mill renewal tax levy to fund current expenses. If approved, the levy would be expected to generate $3,828,863 annually, costing property owners $132 per $100,000 of assessed value.
  • Ravenna City School District: Five-year, 5.47-mill additional tax levy to fund emergency requirements. If approved, the levy would be expected to generate $2,750,000 annually, costing property owners $192 per $100,000 of assessed value. (Ravenna schools are in fiscal caution, according to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.)
  • Streetsboro City School District: A continuing 5-mill additional tax levy to fund emergency requirements. If approved, the levy would be expected to generate $3,885,000 annually, costing property owners $175 per $100,000 of assessed value.
  • Mogadore Local School District: Six-year, 5.93-mill additional tax levy to avoid an operating deficit. If approved, the levy would be expected to generate $804,000 annually, costing property owners $208 per $100,000 of assessed value. (Mogadore schools are in fiscal caution, according to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.)
  • Springfield Local School District: Five-year, 2.74-mill renewal tax levy to fund emergency requirements. If approved, it would be expected to generate $1.6 million annually, costing property owners $84 per $100,000 of assessed value. (Springfield schools are in fiscal watch, according to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.)
  • Springfield Local School District: Five-year, 7-mill renewal tax levy to fund current expenses. If approved, it would be expected to generate $2,378,000 million annually, costing property owners $113 per $100,000 of assessed value.

The city purchased approximately 47 acres of lakefront property at the former SeaWorld site from Industrial Commercial Properties in 2024. “It was a great event,” Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin said of the event that drew 50 to 60 people. Because a section of the park spills over into Bainbridge Township, the Bainbridge Trustees had to approve Aurora’s preliminary design plan for the park, which they did. […]
