Another July 1 came and went last Saturday. Eighteen of them now since July 1, 2005, the day my dad died of a massive heart attack at my parents’ home in Mogadore.

A Kent man is kayaking the entire Mississippi River to raise cancer awareness

Kent resident Chad Schrack is in the midst of a 60-to-70-day kayaking trip down the Mississippi River, his latest feat to raise awareness and donations for colorectal cancer since his wife Sheila was diagnosed in 2006.
Township truck stolen from Brimfield Fire Department
Brimfield police are looking for whoever stole a Ford F-150 pickup belonging to the township fire department at about 3 p.m. July 3.

The annual Ravenna Area Chamber of Commerce “Only in Ravenna” event will take place downtown on Saturday, July 15. There will be live music, food trucks, DORA drinks and raffle prizes. The organizers are looking for acoustic musicians to perform on the corners of each city block to add to the ambiance and experience.

Our flag flies 24 hours, seven days a week to show gratitude for the freedom that we do not take for granted. The Feb. 9 coroner’s report is brief. Remains belonging to a “John Doe” had been found in the woods by 408 Devon Place, site of University Hospitals medical facilities and a nearby Bob Evans restaurant. No trauma or suspected cause of death could be identified.

Following my column last month, I received a phone call from Chris Craycroft, executive director of Portage County Parks. She reminded me that our county parks system does offer a few hiking excursions which are geared for our senior neighbors. Twice a month, they offer “Senior Hikes” at local parks that are ADA accessible. These are slower-paced walks appropriate for all ages, plus a park staff member always accompanies the group.

Aurora’s annual Fourth of July celebration will take place Tuesday, July 4. The festivities will include a 5-kilometer run, parade, festival and fireworks display.
