After more than 13 years as an organization, the Cocoon Makers are looking for a new home. The Cocoon Makers were started by two women, Linda Hall and Marilyn Pol, who had a shared concern for homeless members of their community. The group began making what it called cocoons, or quilted bedrolls for homeless individuals, but now makes a variety of projects for different organizations. The Garrettsville Fall Fest merged into the Garrettsville Oktoberfest, and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 it will be held in downtown Garrettsville. There will be accordion music from noon until 2 p.m., with local restaurants serving up some traditional Oktoberfest foods such as Oktoberfest beer, kielbasa sandwiches, hasenpfeffer with potatoes, schnitzel, kraut balls and pretzels at Garrett’s Mill, with Slim & Jumbo’s offering wurst platters and schnitzel. Pet owners sometimes face issues financially providing for their companions. Deirdre Reaves of Kent knows this problem all too well. Twelve years ago, Reaves was facing the possibility of parting with her dog, Dink.

Immaculate Conception Church will start its monthly spaghetti dinners Thursday, Sept. 18 in the church hall at 251 W. Spruce Ave. in Ravenna. Cost will remain the same: $12 for adults, $5 for children, and free for children under 3.

In a time when it’s easy to dwell on the world’s problems, Portage County Auditor Matt Kelly is choosing action over apathy. He was inspired by a friend who walked 22 miles a day across America to increase awareness of the 22 veterans a day that lose their life to suicide.

The Aurora Fall Festival will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. The Fall Festival is a beloved annual tradition presented in partnership with the City of Aurora and the Aurora Chamber of Commerce.

Kent City Council sustained the planning commission’s decision to reject developer Grey Fox Capital’s request to rezone two parcels of land on Franklin Avenue from Industrial to R-3 High Density Residential at the council committee meeting Sept. 3.

The state Route 44 corridor project that would give a facelift to the area in Rootstown from Tallmadge Road to Dollar General continues to be looked into. Engineering firm OHM Advisors conducted a recent study on the topic; OHM will present its findings, including community-survey results, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22 at Rootstown Middle School at 4190 State Route 44.
