OSU Extension Portage County held its annual celebration on Oct. 9th, 2022 at Wingfoot Lake State Park to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our 4-H volunteers as well as the Gold Medal and Youth Award winners. While several Democratic candidates appeared at the event and met with residents to answer their questions, not one Republican candidate attended, despite having been invited.
The League of Women Voters of Kent held its regular meet-the-candidates event at the Kent United Methodist Church on Oct. 8, but although they invited all local challengers, only the Democratic candidates attended.

The Ohio School Report Cards rate schools on a five star ranking system, and take academic performance, attendance, graduation rates and other metrics into account. This year’s rankings have been watched particularly closely because of the challenges and setbacks brought on by the pandemic.
Fall is in the air, so that means it’s time to talk about Halloween! Trunk or Treat will be Sunday, Oct. 30, from 2-4 p.m. at the township park. Those passing out candy are asked to arrive between 1:30 -1:45 p.m. to be set up by 2 p.m.

Five years later, the city will now pursue actions that are more than symbolic. Kent leaders have hired a consulting firm specializing in sustainability to recommend policies that will reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions.
As one drives south on Route 43 through Geauga Lake one sees the overgrown parking lot and the deteriorating green privacy fence that hides from view the remnants of the amusement park. What’s not hidden are the childhood and families memories of the times spent riding the Big Dipper and the carousel, eating cotton candy, and losing money on the midway games. My fondest memory of the park goes back to July 26, 1967 when I and several of my friends ventured out to the park to see Paul Revere and the Raiders as part of radio station WIXY 1260’s “Appreciation Day” concert. The loud screams from the Big Dipper and the melodies from carousel are now silent. However, the memories of the park will live in its history.

If you’re not familiar with Leadership Portage County, they provide unique insights into Portage County by exploring and developing various styles, theories and examples of leadership through their training course. LPC provides opportunities to build relationships and networks and serves as a catalyst for volunteerism and positive change in Portage County.

Back in July, Kent City Council said it wanted to update the city flag, a little-used banner designed by an elementary school student in 1975. Over 30 Kent residents submitted proposals that will go before a committee for consideration.

Rising food and gas prices are pushing more families to visit food pantries for the first time, even as inflation and a decline in food donations test those same pantries and their suppliers.
I blame the book I’m currently involved with for me getting locked out of the car at work the other day. I realize “the other day” for me can be anywhere from yesterday back to 1986, but this was literally the other day.

Cuts across the University Hospitals system have hit Portage County once again, with the recent announcement that UH Portage will no longer provide labor and delivery services after Nov. 12.
State Route 261 in Kent and Franklin Township was constructed in the 1960s to be part of a larger freeway system that was never built. Now, the “highway to nowhere,” as some locals call it, is a physical barrier between downtown Kent to the north and residents living to the south.

Jeanette and Jim Doerfler hosted a picnic for former classmates at their home in Streetsboro. The event was to welcome former Ravennan Donna Bocanelli Snyder for a visit from her home in Reno, Nev. Donna flew in with her daughter, Carol, to visit with sister-in-law Lena Bocanelli for a week.
