County roundup: Rootstown parks get an upgrade, plus news from Paris and Deerfield

Paris

The second annual Paris Township Car Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 22 at the Shearer Community Center at 9355 Newton Falls Rd. in Ravenna. All makes, models and years are welcome. The car show will benefit the Paris Township Fire Department.

“Last year, we hosted 16 cars and raised $721 for the fire department,” township Trustee Co-Chair Ed Samec said. “This year, we aim to double the amount raised and have a lot of fun in the warm summer sun doing so.”

In addition, there will be food, music by DJ Boogiemen, trophies and a raffle. Township fire trucks will be on display, and you will also be able to add to your Dash Plaque collection.

There is no registration fee. Donations are most appreciated and will benefit the fire department. For more information, contact Samec at 330-389-1313.

After working on obtaining a generator for the community center/fire department for a couple years, the township finally approved the motion for the purchase of one.

“It will keep us under power if power is lost,” township Chair Dave Kemble said. “With the power outages, especially from the couple storms we had earlier in the year where the power was out for three, four days, we really need a generator. We tried for about two years to get a grant for one, but we weren’t able to find one. So the funds are coming from the American Relief Act, the last of the COVID funding.”

Wesley Electric will start on the project very soon. The cost is $43,306.

Rootstown

Rootstown is in the process of improving its two parks, Rootstown Township Park and Gracie Fields. The township will use federal grant money it received to put a sewer through Township Park by the pavilion so it can install restrooms.

The township received two other grants — a capital budget grant from the State of Ohio to put a driveway in at Township Park and Gracie Fields, and a recreational trail program grant for a paved walking trail around Township Park. Each grant is for a little more than $100,000.

“We have to get bids for all three projects,” township Trustee Brett Housley said.

In addition, a dog park was recently put in at Township Park. There will be a grand opening in late July or early August in which the entire community is invited. More information is to come.

Deerfield

The township received a federal SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) grant in the amount of $500,000 that will go to its fire department.

“It goes toward equipment, hiring, training, retention of employees, things like that,” township Chair Ed Dean said. “We’ll get the money in stages over four years.”
