County roundup: Edinburg needs funds and location for new fire station, plus Rootstown updates

Edinburg Township is still looking into building a new fire station. The township’s ideal location for it would be near where the current fire station is but closer to the intersection of state routes 14 and 18.

“It’s really in the preliminary stages,” township Vice Chair Chris Diehl said. “The preliminary pricing might depend on whether we have to buy more property or not. It’s going to cost $3-4 million to build this, and we don’t have that kind of excess money in our budget.

“We’ve tried several times to get grants over the years, but we just keep running into stone walls with it. Things like this go at a snail’s pace. We’ve been working on this for a year-and-a-half already. We’re hoping to have it for the voters in the November election.”

The current fire station is very old.

“Some of it dates clear back to the 1920s,” Diehl said. “It just isn’t workable anymore.”

Rootstown

The Rootstown Township Lions Club annual Easter Egg Hunt was held March 30 at Rootstown Community Park.

“The weather wasn’t the best, but the kids still enjoyed it,” township Chair Dave McIntyre said. “Everyone enjoyed hot chocolate.”

Portage Tree Farms is donating almost 20 trees to Rootstown Community Park.

“We’ll be planting them soon,” McIntyre said. “They’re good-sized trees.”
