Superintendent Mike Roberto addressed the board about the 5.9-mill operating levy scheduled to be on the Nov. 7 ballot.
If the board gives the green light to the High School Plan, then the Master Plan would be developed over the next year. Roberto stated he would be happy to answer any questions the board may have.
An ordinance for the mayor to enter into agreement with ICP Geauga Lake, LLC to purchase 40 acres of land and 53.63 acres of a body of water for the construction of a pool, beach and Lake Loop easement, taking the necessary funds from the General Fund (1). Ordinance will move on to second reading.
Trustee John Lampe reported that he has the blueprints for the Pavilion and Restroom Project. The next step will be to begin on an itemized budget in order to start work.
Cihan completed a NOPEC (Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council) grant application and received an acknowledgement that it had been received by the deadline. Approval is pending.
Karen Pope, director of personnel/chief of staff, explained to council that they’re seeking approval for a new, classified, full-time position of finance coordinator to replace the accounts payable and administrative assistant positions. This new position will ensure accuracy for Aurora’s finances. Motion was made, seconded and approved for the item to be forwarded to the regular council meeting.
J. Derthick updated the trustees on the Hankee Road culvert project. The culvert pipe arrived and is in place. It arrived on six trucks! Base gravel is now being installed.
Prior to this interview, the resident had already provided Norfolk & Southern with an estimate to fix his septic system in the amount of $30,000. Since then, the railroad has indicated to the resident that it is “working on it.”
Mayor Womer Benjamin informed council that due to the recent announcement of the closing of the Aurora Advocate, she met with the editor of the Akron Beacon Journal and Gannett Publishing last week in an effort to find news coverage for Aurora.
Residents weighed in against a yard parking ban that was proposed by council. Council passed the ordinance on second reading but said they wanted more opinions.
Trustee John Lampe was referred to architect Tom Mayer, who will be able to create plans for the all-inclusive restrooms the village wants to install at Old Middle School Park. Mayer will complete the plans free of charge to the village.
An ordinance amending the Village of Garrettsville Employee Handbook relating to mandatory employee training. Council Member Chris Knop explained that this amendment is to add ALICE Training (sometimes known as active-shooter preparedness training).
Oros also offered information relative to the public meeting held Jan. 16 on the topic of the resolution proposing pool fence requirements be lowered from 6 feet to 4 feet.
Law Director DePiero responded that he has received a lot of comments on Ordinance 2023-004, and it is not his intention to rush this piece of legislation through council.
Fiscal Officer Julia Pemberton called the meeting to order and began with a list of motion requests for key organizational roles and items for the 2023 year.
This meeting began with interaction between the trustees and visitors at the meeting. Three people were introduced and spoke briefly with the trustees, often with the trustees asking specific questions of visitors or providing information to them.
The meeting was very well attended by the public, and several residents wanted time to address the council. Each was limited to five minutes, and each resident spoke about the same topic: the ongoing investigation of the relationship between Chief Urso and Patrol Officer Brothers.
