Around Charlestown: Welcoming new pastors and getting ready for Halloween plans

There have been many changes at Charlestown United Methodist Church in the recent past. The most recent was the retirement of Rev. Norma J. Bates. Her retirement was marked with a brunch in the church community room following her final sermon Aug. 27.

While serving at Ravenna First United Methodist Church, Pastor Norma had been appointed to also serve at Charlestown part-time and had been here for less than one year. She had hoped to be here for another year, but those plans were cut short due to health issues.

Pastor Norma is well known in Charlestown, as it was here in 1997 that she was appointed as pastor of her first church. She remained here until 2006, when she was given another church to serve. Over the years, she remained close to many members of the church. Pastor Norma will remain in the hearts and prayers of those at Charlestown U.M.C.

Now for the newest change. Charlestown United Methodist Church welcomes Rev. James Lewis and Rev. Karol Lewis. They have been appointed by the Canal District superintendent, Rev. Angela Lewis, to a three-point charge. They are currently pastoring Twin Falls United Methodist Church, and as of Sept. 17 they will also serve Charlestown and Ravenna United Methodist churches.

They are a married couple, have two grown children and are very excited to begin this new assignment. Pastor Jim also serves in the U.S. Army Reserve as chaplain. Their first Sunday in Charlestown is Sept. 17, with the worship service beginning at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend and meet the new pastors.

It’s not too early to think about Halloween. Trunk or Treat will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29 at the township park. There was a great turnout last year, so let’s do it again!

Residents are encouraged to bring their treats and decorate their car trunks. Cars should be in place by 1:45 p.m. There will be a prize for the best-decorated car. The Boo! Walk through the woods will be decorated, and candy and surprises will be handed out. There will be free hot dogs, chips and beverages. Plan to join in the fun!
