Around Charlestown: Memorial Day, fun upcoming events and dumpster day details

Charlestown United Methodist Church invites you to a Sip and Paint at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 19. Find your inner artist while enjoying snacks and mocktails. No prior art experience necessary! All supplies, snacks and mocktails are included for $20. Please register your name and phone number either by  text (330-281-3723) or email ([email protected]) so we know to expect you. You may pay at the door. So grab a couple friends and join us for a fun evening.

The township’s annual dumpster day is Saturday, May 20 at the township park. Please no tires, batteries, paint, chemicals, air conditioning units or computers. Proof of township residency is required.

Charlestown’s Annual Memorial Day Parade and Service will be held Sunday, May 28. The parade will begin at 11 a.m., commencing at the park and ending at the cemetery for the service. Observers may gather at the town center.

If you would like to participate in the parade, lineup begins at 10:15 a.m. at the park. Anyone may participate; however, no politicking is allowed. Antique or collectible cars, tractors, motorcycles and trucks are welcome. Children may ride their bicycles, decorated in a patriotic theme, to compete for prizes. We would be honored to have all veterans participate by coming to the park, and the parade manager will provide your transportation to the cemetery.

We are honored to have Lieutenant Colonel Shaun T. Robinson as our speaker at the cemetery. Born and raised in Rittman, Ohio, he is a graduate of Kent State University and has been a member of the Ohio National Guard for 36 years. He was recently deployed to the National Capital Region as tactical director for the Joint Air Operations Center. He has served three combat tours and has been awarded the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Achievement Medal. Please join us to remember and honor those who gave their lives in service to our country.

Summer is near, and that means yard sales! Charlestown’s Annual Yard Sale Days will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 2 and 3 (Friday and Saturday). The idea is if we have many yard sales on the same days, it should attract more shoppers to our community. If you would like to register your sale, please text 330-281-3723 or email [email protected] with your name, address and phone number. Your sale will be advertised in The Portager, on The Activity Committee Facebook page, in the Charlestown Happenings Newsletter and on the Charlestown digital sign. Maps will be made showing the location of the sales and given to each person to hand out at their sale. Also, a balloon will be given to you to mark your sale. If you have questions, contact Ruth Ann using the above info. Please register by Thursday, May 25.

The Charlestown Historical Society met recently and came up with a few projects that they hope residents, both current and former, could help them with: They would like to delve into the history of the fire department and the town hall. Any memories, pictures or newspaper articles would be very helpful.

Another project they would like to accomplish is a collection of essays from community members about their memories of how the pandemic affected the lives of their families. They can be long or brief and include photos or newspaper articles. Whatever you find informative and interesting will be saved for posterity. If you would like to help with either of these projects, please contact Patty Eskridge at 330-842-2965.
