Around Brimfield: Double your donation to Brimfield Community Cupboard

- Shirley Mars

Congratulations to the Field High School Varsity Girls Softball team on a stellar season! The team recently got a grand police escort to Kent State University to play West Geauga High School and won the regional championship game with a score of 15-5! Making it to regionals is an historical first for Field Falcons, but that is not the end. At 3 p.m. on June 5, the team will play a state semi-final game against Kenton Ridge at the Firestone Stadium in Akron.  GO FIELD FALCON GIRLS!!!

Congratulations to all Field graduates! I loved the video that Betsy Dalziel posted on facebook showing a Field Falcon time machine with kindergarteners going in one door of Brimfield Elementary School carrying the traditional red book bag as the seniors in their red graduation gowns marched out the other door. Time flies when you are a FALCON!

Brimfield Bike Rodeo – June 13, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Last month, I wrote about a NOPEC grant for $1,500 that was awarded to the Brimfield Community Cupboard to host a FREE Bike Rodeo for children ages 5 through 12.  Volunteers have been busy organizing the event, which will be held at Brimfield Elementary School. Children are invited to bring their bikes, helmets and an adult for a FREE fun-filled day of bicycle safety activities, including a bicycle obstacle course, bicycle inspections by Eddie’s Bike Shop and more. There will also be FREE hot dogs courtesy of Mike’s Place Restaurant and FREE cones from Stoddard’s Custard Truck courtesy of the Brimfield Police Department. All children attending will receive one raffle entry to win one of four Trek bicycles.  See you, rain or shine!

Brimfield Community Cupboard

“Hunger is not a problem. It is an obscenity. How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world”. ~ Anne Frank

Forty-seven years ago, the Brimfield Community Cupboard opened to address the problem of hunger in our community. Hazel and Sam DeBartolo were the first supervisors and served together until 2010 when Sam died while picking up food at the Akron-Canton Foodbank. Hazel continued at the Cupboard for four more years. They were deeply passionate about helping others, and after all these years, their legacy lives on today. The all-volunteer staff partners with the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, along with many local organizations, businesses, and residents, to continue the mission of helping residents in need of assistance.

During the year, Meijer generously sponsors “Simply Give Double Match Days”. Donations made on Double Match Days are effectively tripled. These funds are used to purchase meat for pantry families. The next Double Match Day is on Saturday, June 13. Brimfield Community Cupboard donation cards can be found near the checkouts (or ask a store manager if you cannot find them). Another option is to drop off a donation for the Brimfield Food Cupboard at the Brimfield Hometown Bank before June 13, and a Cupboard volunteer will purchase it for you on Double Back Saturday.

The Cupboard, located at 1235 Tallmadge Rd., is open 9:30-11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On the second Tuesday of the month, the BCC is open from 5:30-6:30 p.m. by appointment only. Food pantry clients need only meet the following criteria:

Be a Brimfield resident and qualify for assistance with income below the Ohio Dept. of Job and Family Services, Federal and State Funded Food Program Guidelines.

Show identification at every visit to the Cupboard (driver’s license or state ID card).

Show proof of residency on every visit to the Cupboard (utility bill or business correspondence letter dated within the last month).

Clients may receive grocery assistance from the Cupboard every 30 days. Food insecurity increases during the summer when children are home from school, and according to Meals on Wheels America, "Millions of older adults across the U.S. face hunger every day… They often have to choose between paying for health care, utilities or food."

Many senior citizens may not be aware that they qualify for assistance. A household of one qualifies if their income is less than $31,300 per year (or $2,608 per month/$602 per week). A household of two qualifies if their income is less than $42,300 per year (or $3,525 per month/$813 per week). The Brimfield Food Cupboard has been a blessing to our community for many years and is always happy to have new volunteers and/or donations. The Cupboard can be reached at 330-510-1084.

WARNING!  Beware of small liquid filled plastic pouches on a stick poked into the center of some hanging planters.  Curious about what it was, I pulled it out, as a liquid slurry suddenly squirted all over my face and clothes.  I immediately smelled like a pile of fresh dung and realized I had just been fertilized.

Until next time. Got news? Share it by contacting Shirley Mars at 330-673-0241 or at mars@ohiomars.com

Baker: Whom do you serve?

- by Kathy Baker. - This week, we marked a solemn holiday, dedicated to honoring the memory of all military personnel who sacrificed their lives in service of our country. More recently, many also consider this holiday as a day on which to honor and remember all loved ones who have passed on.
