Three candidates are vying for the position of Deerfield Township trustee: Laura Lindberg, Stephanie Barringer and incumbent Mark Bann. One of them, Lindberg, in June settled a civil lawsuit accusing her of embezzling from her own mother’s estate, according to Portage County court records.

After nearly two years, Portage County native Kent Waldeck, 45, has begun the final stages of construction on Crafted Artisan Meadery, a new meadery located at 1292 Waterloo Rd. in Suffield, formerly the Reformed Church of Suffield.
Village council recently passed legislation to extend the contract one more year from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, for trash pickup and recycling for the village.
Mogadore High School graduates and retired coaches Gino Calcei and Michael Ganitch were honored as the most distinguished Mogadore alumni at the Wildcats’ Homecoming Game against the Southeast Pirates on Oct. 6.

Assured by a report that Streetsboro is maxed out on hotels, motels and car washes, Mayor Glenn Broska on Oct. 23 said city leaders are drafting legally defensible legislation so that the city will be well positioned to handle future development.

Rob Senderoff is 247-147 in 12 seasons as the men’s basketball head coach at Kent State University, making him the winningest and longest-tenured coach in program history. His Golden Flashes won Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament championships in 2017 and 2023, automatically qualifying for the NCAA Tournament both years. Last season’s squad went 28-7, the best record of Senderoff’s career and the best by the Flashes since the 2007-08 campaign. And he earned MAC Coach of the Year honors in 2022.
I wanted to take a moment to respond to the paid ad placed by John Kuhar in Wednesday’s digital edition. Throughout his “letter,” Mr. Kuhar touted a record of service for Kent residents, and prioritizing their safety. Unfortunately, Mr. Kuhar left a few details out.

State fire officials have still not determined the cause of the fire that gutted part of the Kent mill nearly a year ago, as residents grow puzzled and concerned about the building’s upkeep.
Kent Fire Chief Bill Myers remains on administrative leave after an investigation that has since been called off, city officials said, declining to state what was being investigated or why.
The Ravenna School District is reaching out to the Ravenna Area Chamber of Commerce and its members in hopes of creating a partnership designed to help Ravenna High School’s most at-risk seniors become work-ready before graduation in May.

Masks. They’re in vogue at this time of year, worn by kids trick-or-treating, and occasionally by politicians running for office. There was a lot of mask-wearing, too, during the recent pandemic. And it’s also true that we can use metaphorical masks to hide our private selves from the world.
