Harry DeVault was a legend long before I arrived at the Record-Courier in March 1994. Harry had covered Kent Roosevelt High School and Kent State athletics for decades by then — decades that included yours truly reading his stories daily in my formative years. As far as I was concerned, no R-C sports section was complete without seeing Harry’s byline in it.

Last month, the Kent Police Department and CSX, the rail transportation company that owns part of the land the community was camped on, asked those living on the property to vacate by Oct. 1, citing safety concerns.
Kent City Council has never overturned an Architectural Review Board ruling. Until now. Council members Jack Amrhein and Roger Sidoti cast the only votes against Landis’ signage request.
A crowd in the Palmyra Fire Station erupted in cheers as the Board of Trustees voted unanimously against rezoning a Tallmadge Road lot from residential to commercial, sinking tentative plans for a Dollar General.
Kent is set to extend its Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) borders to include two more businesses. The outdoor refreshment area will extend across the Main Street Bridge and down Gougler Avenue to accommodate the Bell Tower Brewing Co. at the corner of Park Avenue and Gougler.

It was Nov. 23, 1985. My senior year. It already had not been a good month. My maternal grandmother passed away in the early morning hours of Nov. 1 at age 65 after a brutal year-long battle with cancer. Her graveside services a few days later in Brimfield were held amidst a cold, steady rain that chilled me to the bone, my dress shoes sinking into the soggy, muddy ground the way my soul was swallowed up by the grief of losing my grandma.

Ravenna City Council approved a rate increase for curbside recycling collection on Monday night, satisfying a request from Portage County’s struggling recycling center to standardize the county’s rates at $5.50 per residence per month.
The Main Street Mile is a curated, one-mile loop that encompasses the heart of Downtown Ravenna. The Mile travels along the designated Historic District, from Sycamore Street to Clinton Street, to engage visitors in business, history and health. The walk shows off the beautiful and historic architecture, encourages foot traffic to businesses, and helps participants get fresh air and exercise one-tenth of a mile at a time.

In a sweeping resolution to the county’s curbside recycling conundrum, the Portage County recycling center will end all curbside pickup contracts at the end of the year and ask the communities to approve standardized annual agreements.
Mary Denny, a Suffield resident who was among the oldest people in the world at 111, died Tuesday, her family said.
The Portage County Solid Waste Management District is conducting e-waste collection events from 9 a.m. to noon on multiple dates in October throughout the county.
