Portage County voters pass most levies, choose among crowded fields
- Rachel Abbey McCafferty
About a quarter of registered voters in Portage County — 26,525 individuals — cast ballots in the Nov. 4 election. Here’s a look at some of the candidate races and issues that were decided this Election Day.
The candidates
Brimfield voters selected Kevin Scott (1,178 votes) and Nicholas Coia (1,120 votes) for township trustees out of the seven candidates on the ballot. Jasmine Golden will serve as the township’s fiscal officer, winning the election against Blake Johnson 1,390 to 678.
Benjamin Tipton (2,583 votes), Tracy Wallach (2,312 votes) and Sarah Elizabeth Wesley (2,065 votes) were selected to serve on Kent City Council. And Christopher A. Perme (69 votes), Christopher Szell (66 votes), Juan Fernandez (62 votes) and Graham S. Rubin (55 votes) were selected out of seven candidates for Hiram Village Council.
While there were quite a few crowded races, there were also plenty that were uncontested, like for the ones for Kent and Aurora mayor. Jack Amrhein will move into the Kent mayor’s office, and Ann Womer Benjamin will retain her role in Aurora.
The issues
Most of the levies on the ballot this time were renewals, though there were a few replacement and additional levies, as well. Most passed, though the two renewal and increase levies in Palmyra Township for fire and EMS were notable exceptions. Both failed.
The Streetsboro City School District levy, which would have been a new additional levy, also failed, 1,181 for the levy to 2,075 against it.
And the additional levy for the Community EMS District was close, 649 for and 691 against.
