Tyler Woodruff Judd

Judd TylerTyler Woodruff Judd, age 94 of Aurora, Ohio, passed away June 16, 2026. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio to the late George and Helen (nee Woodruff) Judd. After Helen was widowed at an early age, she married Otto Van Orsdale, who became a loving stepfather to Tyler, raising him along with his step-sister, Geraldine Boyles (nee Van Orsdale). Tyler is also preceded in death by his beloved wife Marilyn "Casey" Judd (nee Kaserman). They were married 68 years.

Tyler is survived by his dear children Leigh Anne (Michael) Reardon, Lewis Judd, and Amy (Kenn) Cicigoi, and his cherished grandchildren Devlin (Katie) Reardon, Tess Reardon, Kelsey Cicigoi, and Tyler Cicigoi.

Tyler became a prominent engineer and research physicist. After graduating from Hiram College in 1952 with a degree in Science, he enlisted and served as a US Naval officer. After leaving service, he became an engineer at TRW. He subsequently worked at Republic (later LTV) Steel's Electromechanical Research Center in Independence, Ohio, becoming head of the nondestructive testing (NDT) division. Throughout his career, he focused heavily on NDT; specifically, using eddy current technology to test metals and alloy materials. He secured several patents, serving as a pioneer in NDT technology throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Tyler's primary contribution to industrial engineering was overcoming the limitations of standard magnetic inspections on moving, hot, or irregularly shaped steel parts, so that manufactured steel could be scanned for structural integrity. Tyler also actively represented Ohio's steel industry at federal and national science platforms, specifically serving as an expert panelist and speaker at National Bureau of Standards metallurgical workshops, and publishing extensively in the American Society for Nondestructive Testing's flagship journal, Materials Evaluation. After leaving LTV Steel, Tyler continued in his field as an independent consultant. After fully retiring, he volunteered at WKHR FM 91.5 where he was assistant engineer and hosted a radio show (Ty's Tunes at 2).

Despite his many accomplishments, Tyler was a modest man who strove, first and foremost, to be a good father and grandfather. He will be fondly remembered as the bike-riding dad who played "Poohsticks" and allowed his kids to jump in the huge piles of leaves he painstakingly raked every weekend every fall. And as the kazoo-playing grandad who brought Porko the Pig to life.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Tyler's memory to a charity of your choice.

A celebration of Tyler's life will be held August 13, from 4:00-6:00 pm, at the Aurora Inn, 30 Shawnee Trail, Aurora, OH 44202. A graveside service will be held August 14 at 1:45 PM at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Rd, Seville, OH 44273.
