County roundup: Shalersville will dedicate Veterans Point, plus news from Aurora and Ravenna

- Roger Gordon

Shalersville

A dedication for the new Veterans Point will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Shalersville Park. This marks a major milestone in the township’s ongoing efforts to honor local veterans and enhance community spaces.

Several Shalersville residents voiced their concern about the data center proposal Aug. 4 at a township trustees meeting. A moratorium remains in place, and no application for a data center has been submitted at this time.

Several township residents expressed disappointment regarding the condition of two homes located in the Red Fox development. One of the properties mentioned is in the process of repossession, which may affect the timeline for improvements.

A township resident raised concerns about Amazon, UPS and landscape companies stopping and parking in the roadway, creating hazards and making it difficult for motorists to pass safely.

She also reported four-wheelers driving on Cooley Road, contributing to safety and nuisance concerns.

A box culvert located at the corner of Diagonal Road and Frost Road is in need of repair. Township Trustee Frank Ruehr is meeting with the Portage County engineer to review the culvert, which is situated near gas, water and sewer lines, requiring careful coordination.

Several Shalersville residents expressed frustration that state Route 303 was chip sealed. Because 303 is a state route, maintenance decisions are made by the state of Ohio, not the township.

Bio-Med is moving from its site at the corner of state Route 303 and state Route 44. The township is actively seeking a new tenant(s). The school building will be available in the summer of 2027, opening potential opportunities for redevelopment.

The mayor’s administration is requesting to repair a 1999 fire engine used as backup at a cost of $40,000.

“It’s an important fire engine,” Womer Benjamin said. “It’s still in fairly good condition.”

Womer Benjamin’s administration is requesting that longtime Parks and Recreation employee Josh Famageltto be promoted to the position of parks coordinator. Famageltto would focus mainly on the new Aurora Park that is being built.
