Rootstown
The Rootstown Historical Society will put on the township’s America 250 celebration Saturday, July 4 at the township park. A parade will kick off at 11 a.m. at Gracie Fields. Decorate your pickup trucks, old military vehicles or really any type of vehicle. The parade will travel north to the park to the Riemenschneider Pavilion, where there will be opening ceremonies with a flag-raising. There will be at least one food truck, plus a food vendor in the pavilion. A DJ will provide entertainment.
The event will also include:
- Former Rootstown Schools history teacher Bob Hurd giving a presentation about the U.S. Constitution.
- Old-time games like the three-legged race, hula hoops, and rolling a hula hoop as far as you can before it falls down.
- A corn-shelling contest where you take dried ear corn and see who can shelve the corn or fill a container the fastest.
- For kids, there will be two bouncy houses and the fire department will have all of its vehicles there for touch-a-truck.
To register for the parade, email rootstownhistoricalsociety@gmail.com or just show up between 10 and 11 a.m. at the Gracie Fields entrance off Cook Road. The festivities will conclude at 5 p.m. Admission to the event is free.
At the June 9 trustees meeting, the Rootstown Historical Society presented three more awards centering around the township’s America 250 celebration. Twenty-five plaques are being presented through July 4. The award winners are being honored for their distinguished public service to the township.
The following are the three individuals/organizations awarded June 9:
- Bill Morgan – A good steward. Volunteers his time with activities at Gracie Fields. Did electrical work at the township park.
- Bill Hahn – Head of the Rootstown Township Road Department. He and his crew keep the township looking nice. He also serves as Homeland Cemetery’s sexton.
- Rootstown Fire Department – Keeps citizens safe with outstanding work regarding fire and medical emergencies.
The fire department ordered a new chassis for an ambulance. The old box will be transferred to the new chassis.
Anyone who has shepherd hooks on headstones at Homeland Cemetery must remove them as soon as possible. They are not allowed at the cemetery. If the hooks are not removed, Hahn will take them down and store them.
