County roundup: Rootstown is getting a new mural, plus news from Edinburg and Paris

The Rootstown Light It Up Committee, in coordination with the JEDD board, is painting a mural on the side of the Supreme Hair Design building at the corner of state Route 44 and Tallmadge Road.

An artist is putting renditions together, then the Light It Up Committee will vote for its favorite. The word “Rootstown” will be in the mural, which will also feature different pieces and parts of the township within it.


Rootstown Township is going to dedicate the new pavilion/restrooms at Rootstown Community Park to the Riemenschneider family, which is well known throughout the township.


Rootstown Youth Basketball registration is open to boys in second through sixth grade. The deadline to register is Monday, Oct. 7. Participants can register from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 at Rootstown High School.

Second-graders will participate in the Kent Rec Basketball League. Grades 3-6 teams will participate in either the Kent Rec Basketball League or the Salem Youth Basketball League.

Practice will start at the beginning of November and will be held mostly at Rootstown school properties. Each team’s coach will be in contact through the “Team Reach” app. Game times and locations will be announced at a later date. The season will run from November through February.

The cost per athlete is $125. Checks are to be made out to “Rootstown Sports Boosters,” or you can Venmo “Rootstown Sports Boosters.” Each must be marked “Rootstown boys youth basketball.”

The girls basketball tip-off dinner will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Immaculate Conception Hall at 409 W. Main St. in Ravenna. The high school and middle school teams will be introduced. The guest speaker will be Portagesports.com publisher and editor Tom Nader.


Edinburg

Edinburg Township recently purchased a new small dump truck for the road department. The old one was sold to the Portage County Fairgrounds.

Paris

Beginning Monday, Sept. 30, the Portage County District Library Bookmobile will be in the parking lot of the Shearer Community Center from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. every Monday for the foreseeable future. The community center is located at 9355 Newton Falls Rd. You must have a county library card to sign out books. If you do not already have one, the bookmobile workers will give you one.

A craft show will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Shearer Community Center. Food will be available. Proceeds will go to the Paris Township Fire Department.
