County roundup: Rootstown announces Memorial Day plans, plus news from Paris

The Rootstown Lions Club’s Annual Rootstown Memorial Day Parade and Flag Raising will be held Monday, May 25.

The parade lineup will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the NEOMED parking lot. All units must be in place by 9:45 a.m. The parade will start at 10 a.m. Any person, group, organization or business is eligible to be in the parade. The approximately three-quarters of a mile route will travel south on Loretta Drive, then eastbound on Tallmadge Road to Homeland Cemetery, where there will be a guest speaker leading a ceremony and a benediction given by a local clergyman.        

  • When you arrive, enter the NEOMED south entrance from state Route 44 next to KeyBank and follow these directions:
  • Take a left at the stop sign to the line-up area.         
  • A registration table along the way will provide a unit number for judging purposes.
  • No drive-thrus will be permitted.
  • Participant drop-offs may be done at either NEOMED Parking Lot B or the parking lot at the start on Loretta Drive.

Parade judges will be positioned at the town center. Categories are: Adult, Youth, Business, Marching and Vehicles. To register, contact Parade Chair Doug Matthews at 330-631-2383 or ddmatthe21@gmail.com.


The Portage County Sheriff’s Office will hold its Fifth Annual Youth Fishing Derby from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 13 at a new location – Rootstown Community Park at 4104 Case Ave.

This is a free event for ages 16 and under. There will be K9 demos and food trucks on site. Registration will take place upon entrance from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Bring your own tackle! A limited amount of poles and bait will be available. Funds donated by the Kent Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited. For more information, call 330-296-5100 or email pcso-events@portageco.com.  

Paris

Paris Township’s annual community Spring Clean Up will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 9 at the Shearer Community Center at 9355 Newton Falls Rd. The drop-off event is open to Paris Township residents only, and proof of residence may be required. Materials from businesses will not be accepted regardless of where the business is located.

This is not to be used in place of your normal garbage pickup service. It is intended for items that may be too large for your weekly garbage collection or for items that may not be accepted by your garbage service.

Items that will be accepted:

  • All types of metal
  • Appliances (refrigerators, dryers, etc.)
  • Furniture (couches, beds, etc.)
  • Regular-sized passenger tires on or off the rims. Limit 10 tires per resident. No truck or tractor tires accepted

Items that will not be accepted:

  • Propane tanks
  • Chemicals
  • Paint
  • Empty paint cans
  • Motor oil
  • Batteries
  • Building materials

The township approved its salt contract for the 2026-27 winter.
