Garrettsville’s Second Annual Zach Peterson Memorial Car Show will take place Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1 at Nelson Ledges Road Course at 10342 State Route 305. Trophies will be awarded for classic cars in several categories. There will be food vendors, music, door prizes and a Chinese raffle.

“This event was huge last year,” Mayor Rick Patrick said, “and we expect it to be bigger this year.”

The Scotch Doubles Benefit for Michael Schustrich will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6 at SkyLane Bowling at 8311 Windham St. Michael (Mikey) was tragically killed at work, leaving behind his wife and newborn son. The costs of $50 per couple and $20 for non-bowlers include three games of bowling, shoe rental, pizza, a Chinese auction (50/50) and draft beer, pop or coffee. Donations are welcome. The 15th Annual Garrettsville Browns Backers Dawg Walk will start at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14. Check-in starts at 9 a.m. First walkers out at 10 a.m. Travel to local stops and draw your poker cards for a chance to win a $150 cash prize for best hand. As always, those who register before the Sept. 7 deadline will receive custom-made T-shirts. If you miss the deadline, that’s OK. You can still sign up and enjoy a free lunch plus receive your poker hand for a chance at the cash. The cost to attend is $25. Funds raised go to the James A. Garfield High School soccer program.

The village’s first Oktoberfest will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 downtown on Main Street rain or shine. There will be food, vendors and music.

Village of Hiram

The Village of Hiram Council approved adding a full-time police officer.

“That’s the second full-time officer we’ve added,” Mayor Anne Haynam said. “We added one last year, so we’re growing our department.”

The Village of Hiram has a public notice out for a bid on the village-owned commercial property known as the Old Light Plant on Wakefield Road on the Hiram College campus. The bid (minimum $75,000) runs until Sept. 15.

The annual BBQ Barn Blast will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Hiram Farm at 11543 Garfield Rd.

“It’s a living, working environment for individuals with autism,” Haynam said.

The menu will include burgers, barbecue chicken, hot dogs, beer, wine, soda and water. There will be music by The Good Nights plus a 50/50 and over 30 basket raffles as well as a chance to win the wheelbarrow of cheer. Sponsorships are available as well.

The costs are $65 per person, $15 per child under 12 years old and $540 for a reserved table of eight.

Your ticket purchase and contributions from raffles and sponsorships help fund the Hiram Farm programs, therapeutic activities and community outreach. Funds raised will go toward improving the farm facilities, ensuring a meaningful day for the farm’s farmers. Your support helps Hiram Farm to continue fostering a welcoming environment where individuals can connect, learn and grow together.

The Hiram Historical Society will host a dinner in an 1880s White House with a woman who portrays Lucretia Garfield, the wife of former United States President James A. Garfield, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21. The historical society is located at 11617 State Route 700. The Garfields lived in the village of Hiram for many years; the former president attended Hiram College. The woman portraying the former first lady will speak about the Garfields’ time in the White House, while guests will enjoy food prepared in the theme of the 1880s. The cost is $65 per person.

Hiram Township

A Hiram Township driving position (truck, snowplow, etc.) will be open due to an upcoming retirement. Anyone interested in applying should call Tom Matota at 330-569-8857.

The township trustees have learned that they have to bid the township’s trash contract.

“We were hoping just to extend the contract with our present trash company,” township Chair Jack Groselle said.

Mantua Township

A fundraising dinner for the Mantua Restoration Society will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12 in the Mantua Center School gymnasium at 11741 Mantua Center Rd. Dine-in or carry-out. No charge but donations accepted. Please consider giving what you’d pay for a comparable meal at a restaurant plus tip. A variety of entrées provided, including one supplied each month from Main Street on the River. Several salads and a variety of desserts, including homemade pies. All food is home-cooked and donated by the MaRSI members – soups to casseroles to cornbread to salads and desserts. Light piano music provided by Steve Stork. Note: This is not a free community meal, but rather a fundraiser for the Mantua Restoration Society which helps provide funds for the restoration and upkeep of Mantua Center’s historic buildings and sites. The Windham Township Trustees held a public hearing for zoning to move frontages from 200 feet to 150 feet for anybody who owns property in the township.

State Representative Heidi Workman spoke at the Freedom Township Trustees meeting Aug. 21 about a petition making the rounds in the state of Ohio to abolish property tax.

Freedom’s annual Fall Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 in front of Town Hall at 8966 State Route 700. Vendors will sell their crafts and goods, the Freedom Township Historical Society will bring cornstalks and pumpkins, and there will be food available plus musical entertainment.
