Aurora is resuming its sidewalk repair program in which the city will partner with residents to repair the sidewalks in front of their properties.

“The city will pay half the cost, and we’ll also bid it so we’ll get a better price,” Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin said.

Aurora City Council signed a road-paving contract with Perrin Asphalt for $1.37 million. The road paving should be completed by July 4.

The first phase of the building of Aurora’s hike-and-bike trail, which will be called the Aurora Trail, is well underway and should be completed in early summer. The 10-foot-wide paved path will be 2.8 miles in length running from State Route 82 in Aurora along the former railroad right-of-way to Chamberlain Road in Mantua Township. Said Womer Benjamin, “It’s really beautiful.”

City council entered into a contract with MKSK for $1.8 million for the design of phase one of Aurora Park and the design of the utilities at the park.

City council entered into a contract with Strand Associates, Inc. for $632,800 for improvements to the Market Place pump station.

“The pump station is actually in Bainbridge Township, but we provide sanitary services to that area,” Womer Benjamin said. “The contract also includes the design of a new pump station at our new park. The sanitary infrastructure that’s there can’t be used anymore.”

Decorative lights will soon be put up on South Chillicothe Road. Perram Electric will be installing them.

Ravenna Township

The Ravenna Township Trustees authorized the Portage County Engineer to prepare bid books for the township’s chip-and-seal project for this year, which will focus on the McElrath development.

“We’ll probably open up the bids on June 10,” township Chair Vince Coia said. “We hope to have the project done by the end of the summer.”

The township trustees received the county engineer’s price of $2,487.67 for a new street light/pole at the intersection of Hayes Road and state Route 14.

“The reason there isn’t a street light there is because when ODOT redid Hayes where it comes out on state Route 14, they moved the road, so it’s no longer with the original street light. It’s farther down the road,” Coia said. “We’re pretty sure it’s going to be done, but we just have to go through the formalities.”

The Portage County Young Marines will put flags on veterans’ graves Thursday, May 22 at Grandview Cemetery.

In the wake of Doug Dillion retiring, Hunter Grimes was promoted from township road worker to the township’s assistant road supervisor.
