Aurora proposes new law for teens driving electric bikes

- Wendy DiAlesandro

Anyone who rides electric bikes or other motorized mobility devices in Aurora has some new regulations to watch.

According to the proposed legislation, no one under the age of 16 would be permitted to operate a low-speed mobility device, motorized bike, moped or e-bike at a speed exceeding 20 miles per hour, either on the road or on city sidewalks.

“Motorized devices, particularly e-bikes and scooters, have become increasingly used, especially by children,” Aurora Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin said. “They can dart in and out of traffic and in front of turning cars without warning. We want to do what we can to ensure the safety of the public with respect to these new and popular modes of transportation.”

City leaders are still working out details of the proposed law. Council will consider the legislation on Nov. 9.
