Around Windham: Wrapping up the school year and community summer updates

- Nicole Sweet

Hello Windham Family!

Happy May Bomber Country! May is always an exciting time. With things like the school year end, graduations, beginning of wedding season, warmer days for ball games, Memorial Day weekend, the kickoff to summer and more. Warmer weather is finally in the air and here are some exciting events and important information coming up in our little town:

Windham Library summer events

Due to the ongoing Windham Library closure, we are happy to announce that our Windham Library's summer events & programming for kids and families will be taking place at the Katherine Thomas Elementary School Library. For our adult patrons, the Garrettsville Library will be hosting all of the Windham Library's adult summer events & programming.

These are temporary locations for our library events, and we are excited to bring a jam-packed summer full of awesome programs for the whole family. Find more information on Windham's children's events at KT Elementary and the adult events at the Garrettsville Library by visiting: https://events.portagelibrary.org/events.

More than just baseball

Shay Sane is the 10U coach for Windham’s Little League. He wrote about his experience with his son Rowan (10), a fourth-grader at KT Elementary, who has cerebral palsy but doesn’t let it limit or define him for the love of baseball. Shay wrote: “Last minute tournament paid off for the Windham Bombers. Blessed to get the opportunity to coach these boys. It was a weekend I hope they all get to remember.

Selfishly, I let Rowan throw the final strikeout. He took enough sacrifices between hit by pitches and baserunning for the team to justify it for me. One day he’ll be done with the game, it won’t be because of anything of his fault.

I got choked up a few times this weekend. As secretly angry at life as I still get, he might be limited physically, I couldn’t be prouder of him every single day. He was mad at me earlier because I gave him the steal sign and he was thrown out. He’s starting to get to the age where he’s aware of accepting that he’s not as fast as the other kids and has to adapt other ways. I said 'Row, we know you’re not the fastest on the team. But that doesn’t mean you don’t get to steal.' It’s always a touchy subject to point out his cerebral palsy. The other team doesn’t care; they want the out. And I don’t care if he gets thrown out, I want him to never feel like he doesn’t get to do what other kids do or treat him differently.

The thing I’m thankful for most about this game is the life lessons it prepares the kids that they don’t even know they’re learning yet. Even if he throws his last pitch sooner than later (I hope he’s got a few more years in him), he’s got some great lessons."

Congratulations to high school creative writers

Windham High School students: Wilma Dufford, 10th grade, Malikye Petich, 10th grade, Jordan Bowersox, 10th grade and Moriah Hawkins, ninth grade, were featured reading original creative writing pieces on a podcast for the Cleveland Public Library. Congratulations to this awesome group, and big thanks to the Ohio Arts Council for funding Windham Schools with a creative writer to support these initiatives.
