Around Windham: Gearing up for back to school and fall fun

- Nicole Sweet

Hello Windham Family!

August is such a special time in Bomber Country. Fall sports are gearing up, the excitement of back-to-school is in the air, and hints of autumn are beginning to show. More than just a change in the calendar, back-to-school season carries a feeling of anticipation, renewal and possibility. As students head back to class after a long summer break, we welcome a new school year filled with opportunities, growth and fresh beginnings.

Windham goes back to school this year after Labor Day weekend on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Many exciting things are happening in Windham; I look forward to keeping the community up to date with all the information I receive every month.

WINDHAM BOMBERS PTO BACK 2 SCHOOL BASH

Windham’s PTO will be hosting a Back 2 School Bash for all Windham students Thursday, Aug. 28 during Meet the Teacher Night. We are still seeking donations; however, we can confidently say due to the incredible generosity of our community and beyond, we are extremely close to ALL school supply lists being covered for this school year for Windham Exempted Village Schools, besides backpacks, lunch boxes and water bottles (we would recommend that families still get those).

If you would still like to donate things such as tissues, Clorox wipes, binders, Expo dry erase markers and other paper products, we will gladly accept them – these we are still in need of. Any extra school supplies that are donated will be used to help teachers get through the school year when they run out. We have a collection box at the Windham Dollar General. You can also check out our Amazon Wishlist on items we still need, and they will ship directly to us: https://amzlink.to/az0UeXMrcj6uT. Thank you for your generosity.

WINDHAM FOOTBALL BOOSTERS INAUGURAL POKER NIGHT

The Windham Bomber Football Booster Club is hosting a Poker Night on Sept. 27 at the Windham Community Center, sponsored by Tim Lally Chevrolet. The event includes poker tables, chance games, basket raffles, door prizes, dinner & drinks (alcoholic & non-alcoholic) and dessert bar. Doors will open at 5 p.m., dinner will be served at 6 p.m., and tables open for play at 6:30 p.m. All gaming participants must be registered by 5:45 p.m. There is a $100 buy-in, which includes dinner and a raffle ticket for a set of custom cornhole boards. Don’t gamble?! You can still join. Dinner tickets are available for $25 and include a door prize ticket. Any questions, contact Sara Dunn at 330-979-9210.

CALLING ALL GIRLS FROM SECOND TO FIFTH GRADE

Windham Girl Scout Troop No. 90019 has openings in our troop. We are an active troop in our community – we do community service, earn badges, make crafts and have lots of fun doing it. If your daughter is interested in joining Girl Scouts, go to gsneo.org or you can message me for more information.

FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS AT THE RFC

The Renaissance Family Center offers free blood pressure screenings. Join us every second Tuesday of the month to have your BP checked while learning from the experts at the University Hospitals Portage Medical Center in Ravenna. Annual physical exams and preventative screenings can keep you healthy by finding and addressing potential health issues before they become big problems. Upcoming dates: Sept. 9, Oct. 14 and Nov. 11.

LIONS CLUB SAUSAGE AND STEAK DATES 2025

Save the dates for the final Lions Club Sausage and Steak Booth weekends: Sept. 5 & 6 and Oct. 3 & 4. Just $6 will buy you the best sausage or steak sandwich in Portage County. The trailer will be located on State Route 303 in the parking lot next to Circle K. Open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The Windham Lions Club has been serving the Windham community since 1955.

Don’t forget, we will be collecting soft plastic from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays at our drive-thru at the Windham United Methodist Church at 9051 N. Main St. No need to get out of your car, we will do the heavy lifting. We will also take any used eyeglasses and hearing aids to be recycled and shared.

I look forward to keeping our Windham community up to date with all the information I receive. Please contact me with anything you may like featured. The Around Windham column runs the third week of each month, and I will need all the information the week prior. You may contact me via text/call at 330-283-2711 or via email at nks1024@icloud.com.

Around Windham: Fall is the new New Year

- by Nicole Sweet .

Hello Windham Family! Post-Labor Day in Bomber Country always seems to be a turning point or symbolic start of a new year. September has a back-to-school/new year vibe that is hard for me to ignore. Author Gretchen Rubin first remarked that “September is the other January” in her book “Happier at Home.” Gretchen noted that “Each year, Labor Day was a milestone that provoked self-evaluation and reflection.”
