Around Windham: Congratulations and welcome to Mayor Terrie Altiere
- Nicole Sweet
Hello Windham Family!
Happy January and 2026; there is something special about the excitement and energy that surrounds the start of a new year. Here is to a new year full of laughter, love and (hopefully) a little less stress. Here’s to 2026 in Bomber Country— let’s make it a good one. Here are some upcoming events and information to look forward to for the end of January and beginning of February:
Tiffany Plaugher – Hometown Hero Award Winner
Congrats to Tiffany Plaugher for winning the Save A Lot store’s Hometown Hero award and a $500 Save A Lot gift card. Tiffany is the heart of her classroom and truly embodies what it means to be a Hometown Hero. As a class paraprofessional, she goes above and beyond every single day to support students and staff with patience, compassion and joy. She sees the potential in every child and meets them where they are, helping them grow academically, socially and emotionally.
Tiffany never hesitates to lend a hand, whether through creating materials, comforting a student having a tough day or stepping in wherever needed. She brings warmth and positivity to everyone around her and treats students like family. Her dedication extends beyond the classroom; she frequently volunteers her own time and resources to make sure every child feels valued and included. Tiffany doesn’t just do her job, she changes lives, making her school community stronger, kinder and more supportive.
Congrats, Tiffany! You make Windham proud, and we are lucky to have you in our school district and in our little town.
Congratulations Mayor Terrie Altiere
Terrie Altiere was formally sworn in as mayor by village Solicitor Charles Gasior on Dec. 16. Mayor Altiere was appointed to fill the vacant mayoral seat and will serve in this capacity through Dec. 31, 2027, in accordance with council action and applicable provisions of the Ohio Revised Code. The village of Windham extends its congratulations to Mayor Altiere and looks forward to her service to the community.
Windham Lions Club Brag Board
The Lions 2025 Brag Board made its debut at the pancake breakfast Jan. 3. Many thanks to David Gauch for putting this together every year. It is a list of all donations and contributions made by them in 2025. The members are Lions Proud. This is what your $8 pancakes or $6 sandwich does, so thank you. The next pancake breakfast will be Sunday, Feb. 1; come and see the brag board and eat some pancakes.
Lions Club & PTO tag up for pancake breakfast
The Windham Schools PTO will be serving at the Windham Lions Club pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, Feb. 1. We have 200 presale tickets to sell – we will get proceeds from presale tickets, not door tickets. Presales are $1 cheaper. Please let us know through our Facebook page or any PTO member if you’d like to purchase a presale ticket and support both organizations and our schools.
Windham Friday Club updates
The Windham Friday Club met Dec. 20 at member Maureen See's house for its year-end meeting and Christmas celebration. This year’s annual December donation, in the amount of $210, will be given to Windham High School to purchase toiletries for the boys locker room.
The Friday Club proudly supports the Windham community and students throughout the year. This year, its support included donations to the Alumni Association, the Windham Girl Scouts, the back-to-school supplies drive, and clothing for the emergency bin at Katherine Thomas Elementary School.
Windham Alumni Scotch Doubles
The Windham Alumni Scotch Doubles event will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 at SkyLane Bowling in Garrettsville. Cost is $55 per couple. Tickets will be sold in advance. Proceeds will support Windham alumni scholarships. Come enjoy some fun with old classmates and fellow alumni.
To purchase tickets, contact Heather Fall, Jodi Kilgore Woolf, Joy Kilgore or Melissa Knight.
We will also be at Windham High School basketball home games to sell tickets – dates will be announced. There will be a Chinese auction and 50/50. All proceeds will go toward the Windham Alumni Scholarship Fund.
Wonder which class will bowl the highest score? All teams must have at least three WHS alumni. If you don’t have a full team, don’t despair: We can match you and your partner with a team.
Reach out for more details. Don’t miss out on all the fun and bragging rights. Grab a partner and bowl for a great cause. Tag your bowling buddy and spread the word.
Grand piano donation
From Ted St. John, CEO of Hope Town and Windham school board member: Sometimes impact means knowing when to pass a gift along.
Recently, Debbie Mann, retired vice president of operations at Allen Aircraft Products, and Tony Badalamenti, former Portage County commissioner, reached out hoping to donate a beautiful Kohler & Campbell baby grand piano to Hope Town. While we didn’t have the space or the right use for it, we knew exactly where it could make music.
Through Ted St. John’s role on the Windham school board, he redirected the gift offer to Windham Superintendent Michael Dobran – who responded with an enthusiastic “yes.” The piano now has a new home at Windham Junior High/High School, where it will support students, music education and creativity for years to come.
What started as an act of generosity became a shared moment of community care – neighbors helping neighbors, and a gift finding the place it belongs. Huge thanks to Debbie and Tony for their thoughtfulness, and to Mr. Dobran and the Windham school team for welcoming this instrument to their school. This is what community looks like when everyone plays a part.

Village Snow Emergency parking reminder
As winter weather moves through Windham, we want to remind residents of our Snow Emergency Parking Ban (Codified Ordinance 351.16) to help keep everyone safe.
When two inches or more of snow accumulate within a 24-hour period, a snow emergency may be declared. Once declared, parking may be prohibited on any or all streets, with “No Parking” signs posted. During a snow emergency, vehicles may not be parked or left unattended on village streets. Brief exceptions apply in the following situations: up to three minutes for passenger loading/unloading, or 30 minutes for property loading/unloading, when permitted.
Keeping streets clear allows our plow and salt crews to do their jobs safely and efficiently. Thank you for your cooperation, patience and continued support of our streets department. Please travel safely and stay warm.
I look forward to keeping the Windham community up to date with all the information I receive. Please contact me with anything you may like featured. The Around Windham column runs the third week of each month, and I will need all the information the week prior. You may contact me via text/call at 330-283-2711 or via email at nks1024@icloud.com.
Thank you, Nicole Sweet.
