I have been asked to resume writing my “Around Windham” column for The Portager. I am a big fan of the Windham area and have lived here for 56 years.
The construction on Hudson Road is about to enter its fourth phase, but it needs to be rebid before moving forward because the previous bids were more than 10% higher than the Portage County Engineering Office’s estimate. The office plans to reopen bidding at the July 11 trustee meeting; if a bid is approved, phase four construction will begin soon.

An ordinance for the mayor to enter into agreement with ICP Geauga Lake, LLC to purchase 40 acres of land and 53.63 acres of a body of water for the construction of a pool, beach and Lake Loop easement, taking the necessary funds from the General Fund (1). Ordinance will move on to second reading.

The Portage Foundation announced the recipients of its 2023 scholarships. This year, the community foundation granted over $55,000 in scholarships to students from various schools in Portage County.

It is great to be back to writing about our great community. When I was asked to write the Around Garrettsville article again, I had to stop and think, how many years have I been writing this article.
A good writer can make a bit of history read like a suspense novel. Both these books show how true this is.

Anyone calling 911 from eight communities around Portage County will now be able to provide Ravenna police dispatchers with real-time information, thanks to a web-based app.
Now that Kent City Council has hired Republic Services for recycling pickup, residents will need to abide by strict rules about what should go in the bins.

Scholarship and Teacher Grant winners presented at the Portage County Retired Teachers Association (PCRTA) luncheon on May 11. The members of PCRTA fund these projects by proctoring exams at NEOMED and through donations. PCRTA reaches out to each Portage County school district each fall with PCRTA Teacher Grant Applications and each spring with PCRTA Scholarship Applications.
Citing zoning, safety and aesthetic concerns, three Portage County townships are imposing moratoriums or even seeking outright bans on commercial wind and solar farms.
