Mary Elizabeth Soos Holtz
Mary Elizabeth Soos Holtz, of Auburn Twp., was born on April 18, 1938 in Johnstown, PA. She died at home surrounded by her family at the age of 84 on July 30, 2022 from Cholangiocarcinoma, or Bile Duct Cancer. She is survived by her two daughters, Kat/Kathy Holtz and Cindy Holtz, her son-in-law, Mark Karabec, and her precious granddaughter, Sarah. Her spouse’s siblings, Patricia and Clair Dunegan of Twinsburg, her brothers, John Soos (Mona) and Tom Soos (Judy) of Oklahoma and her many nieces and nephews also mourn her passing. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Pat/JP Holtz, her son, Pat Holtz, and her sisters Gin and Loretta.
Vocationally, Mary had several jobs in the era of few moms working outside the home. The most significant was working as the accounts clerk and secretary at Crestwood High School in Mantua from 1975 to 2000 when she retired. Working with her student office volunteers gave her joy and hope for the future. She kept in touch with fellow retired co-workers via lunch get togethers.
Mary raised her three children to enjoy sci-fi and horror films as well as musicals. She read Alfred Hitchcock books as bedtime stories. She taught them to love chocolate. She also taught her children a respect for all types of people and modeled a liberal perspective they continue to appreciate.
Mary also shared her values and life-long passions with her only grandchild, Sarah. Whether she was teaching Sarah the alphabet or watching Unsolved Mysteries with her, the two of them stayed very close.
Marbles, rocking horses, and angels grace many spaces within Mary’s home. She treasured the memories of the family and friends who gave them to her.
Mary loved her “movie days” at the theatre and at home. Watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune gave her comfort near the end, and she never tired of watching The Young and the Restless with Sarah.
Mary’s wish was to be cremated. As she put it: “Finally, I will be warm!” No services will be held because Mary did not want to create a situation that could put people at risk for COVID. The family welcomes your condolences and stories of Mary, but in lieu of flowers, she asks that you “stay home, stay safe, and do something nice for somebody.”
