Letter to the editor: Thank an election hero

- Letter to the editor

Editor’s note: The Portager publishes letters to the editor from the community. The opinions expressed are published not because they necessarily reflect those of the publication but because we feel they contribute meaningfully to the local discourse on matters of public interest.

Every election, thousands of Ohioans give their time and energy to ensure our elections are conducted fairly, securely, and with integrity. These dedicated poll workers, election officials, and volunteers play an essential role in protecting one of our most cherished rights — the right to vote.

October 20 was Election Hero Day, an opportunity to recognize these individuals and express our appreciation for their service to our communities and our democracy. They truly are heroes without capes.

Here in Portage County, we are especially fortunate to have an outstanding Board of Elections. Their professionalism, efficiency, and commitment to serving voters set an example for election administration throughout Ohio. Working together across political affiliations, they demonstrate how dedication, cooperation, and a shared commitment to public service can strengthen confidence in our elections. We are grateful for all they do.

Our poll workers are our neighbors, friends, and fellow community members. They are people we see at the grocery store, sit beside at community events and greet on our neighborhood walks. On Election Day, they step forward to serve their communities, often beginning before sunrise and working well into the evening. Their dedication, patience and willingness to serve deserve our appreciation and respect.

As Election Day approaches, please remember the people who make voting possible. A friendly smile, a little patience, or a sincere thank-you can mean so much to someone who has devoted a long day to helping others exercise their right to vote.

Perhaps the most meaningful way to honor our election heroes is to participate in the process they work so hard to protect. Make a plan to vote, encourage others to do the same, and extend kindness to those serving at the polls.

Democracy is strengthened not only by the votes we cast, but also by the people who make those votes possible. Let's celebrate our heroes without capes and thank them for their extraordinary service to our communities.
