Learn all about glass with Henry Halem

“The imagery was based on the shootings at Kent State and the blindness that the political system had in relationship to what young people were about in protesting the war. They were blind to the generation that was protesting,” Halem said. Jeremy Brown/The Portager

Learn all about glass with Henry Halem

- Wendy DiAlesandro

Local glass artist Henry Halem will be the featured speaker at the next Tap Talk, set for 7 p.m. June 16 at North Water Brewing Co., 101 Crain Ave. in Kent.

Halem will review America’s studio glass movement, an artistic shift that transformed glass from a mass-produced, factory made industrial commodity into a respected medium for contemporary fine art and individual sculptural expression.

Halem founded the glass program at Kent State University’s School of Art in 1969, and taught there for 29 years before retiring in 1998. Since then he has focused on studio practice. Tap Talk attendees will meet Halem, learn about glass blowing techniques and view some of his acclaimed work.

Tap Talks is sponsored by the Kent Historical Society, where Halem and his wife Sandy are longtime active volunteers. They recently were presented with KHS’s Volunteer of the Year Award, which will hereafter be known as the Halem Award.
