Village of Hiram
The Hiram Historical Society will have the dedication for the new James A. Garfield monument at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Hiram Village Hall at 11617 Garfield Rd.
Mayor Anne Haynam will be one of several speakers. The 16-foot, 8-inch tall statue of the 20th president of the United States was built and then showcased in Wilmington, Delaware, for many years. Because Garfield spent several years living in the village of Hiram, including as a student at what is now Hiram College, the statue was relocated to Hiram earlier this year and installed on Oct. 19 in a meadow adjacent to the Village Hall.
“We’ll give some of the background to Garfield’s time in Hiram and also give some of the history of the statue,” Haynam said. “We’ll tell the story of how a statue came to be in Wilmington and how it came to be moved to the village of Hiram.
“It’s a white, bronze statue that sits on granite stones. It’s really a stunning statue.”
The village’s Trick or Treat will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. At 7 p.m. that evening, the Hiram Fire Department will host its annual Halloween party with food and contests at the fire department garage at 11617 Garfield Rd.
