County roundup: Garrettsville prepares for car cruise, plus news from Freedom, Mantua, Nelson and Windham

Mantua Township

A fundraising dinner for the Mantua Restoration Society will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8 in the Mantua Center School gymnasium at 11741 Mantua Center Rd. in Mantua Township.

Dine-in or carry-out. No charge, but donations accepted. Please consider giving what you’d pay for a comparable meal at a restaurant plus tip. A variety of entrées will be provided, including one supplied each month from Main Street on the River.

All food is home-cooked and donated by the MaRSI members, from soups to casseroles to cornbread to salads and desserts, including homemade pies. Light piano music will be provided by Steve Stork.

Note … this is not a free community meal but rather a fundraiser for the society that helps provide funds for the restoration and upkeep of Mantua Center’s historic buildings and sites. For more information, contact Susan Pollard at 330-586-8337.


The New Adventures 10-Year anniversary party will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9. Join in for an afternoon/evening of free fun! From 4 to 6 p.m. will be Splash Day activities (slip & slide, crafts, games, photo booth and more), from 6 to 7 p.m. will be dinner and from 7:15 to 9:30 p.m. will be “Outdoor Movie Time” with the 2010 film “How to Train Your Dragon.” RSVP at naearlylearning.com.  

Village of Mantua

Yoga on the Green in the village of Mantua is an all-levels class, so whether you’ve practiced for decades or never a day in your life, take part at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 and at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12. Donations are accepted but not expected. Dress comfortably and bring either a mat, blanket or towel. Be sure to also bring water; hydration is important! Join in and connect breath and movement for overall better health. Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to fill out a brief liability waiver. Sign once and you’re good for the season.  


Stop by the parking lot and basement of the Granary Building at 4690 E. Prospect St. at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8 and Friday, Aug. 22 to get fresh produce and homemade goods at the Farmers and Makers Market! Hang out with friends and check out the vendors. Maybe you’ll find a food truck or some fried rice and egg rolls – you never know what surprises you’ll find!


The Mantua-Shalersville Chamber of Commerce’s annual Scholarship Picnic will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14 on the green space on Main Street. Join in and help raise money to build the Chamber’s scholarship fund. Three Crestwood High School seniors will be presented in May 2026 with a $500 scholarship to help offset the cost of their post-graduate education. Dunk your friends, share some good food and enjoy laughs and a fun time! Available are sponsorships to raise your business’ visibility in the community.


Crestwood High School will host a community pep rally from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. You will also learn more about community groups, businesses, etc. The high school is located at 10919 Main St.


Healthy Hearts Wellness and Yoga will celebrate its grand opening at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 at 10702 Main St. following its 10 a.m. yoga class downtown on the green space. The yoga class is open to the public.

Garrettsville

Garrettsville’s annual Peach Social/Car Cruise will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Garrettsville-Freedom-Nelson Joint Fire District at 8035 Elm St. Awards will be given out in seven vehicle categories. There is no registration fee. Food items for sale will be fresh peaches, peach pies and pizza from Domino’s. The Dennis Chandler Band will provide entertainment, and there will be door prizes and a 50/50 raffle.

“It’s one of our biggest car shows,” Mayor Rick Patrick said. “It’s one that everybody likes to come to.”


Elite Pharmacy relocated but did not have to go very far – from Sky Plaza on Windham Street to the TLC Center, also on Windham Street. The grand opening was approximately three weeks ago.

Village of Hiram

The last two performances of the Village of Hiram’s Summer Concert Series will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3 (Swap Meet) and Sunday, Aug. 17 (The Jolly Gabbers). These free concerts will be at Hadsell Park on Bancroft Street. Bring your own picnic.


Village council is working legislation through to grant an easement to the Buckeye Trail Association to reroute the trail through Village Park.


The village is in the process of refinancing some debt that it currently has that will meet its statutory obligation.

“We’re moving from commercial loans that are collateralized to bonds,” Mayor Anne Haynam said. “These are for old purchases – sidewalks, ambulance and two vehicles. There are no new expenditures.”

Freedom

Freedom’s annual Community Picnic was July 20 in the Town Hall pavilion. The township provided complimentary fried chicken, jojos, pop and water, and the First Congregational Church of Freedom prepared complimentary hamburgers and hot dogs. Attendees brought dishes to pass. Folk singer Foster Brown provided entertainment.

“The picnic was very successful,” township Chair Tom Mesaros said. “About 100 people showed up.”

Windham Township

A public hearing was held at a special Windham Township Trustees meeting July 11 in regard to changing lot frontage from 200 feet to 150 feet. The motion has been tabled.

Nelson

The Nelson Township Trustees passed a resolution to approve the five-year plan with the Portage County Solid Waste District.
