County planning commission will consider data center and cryptomining rules

- Staff Report

The Portage County Regional Planning Commission will meet at 4:30 p.m. today, Oct. 14, at the Crestwood Board of Education, 10880 John Edward Dr. in Mantua. Among the orders of business is a proposal detailing conditional uses developers and property owners of data centers and cryptomining facilities must meet if they want to set up shop in Shalersville Township.

The commission may table, reject, approve or amend the proposal. If they opt for rejection, approval or amendments, they will send their recommendation to Shalersville’s Zoning Commission, which is set to meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at the town hall. The Zoning Commission will preside over a public hearing regarding the proposed conditional uses, and then, like the Regional Planning Commission, will vote to table, reject, approve or amend them.

Should the vote be in favor of approval, with or without amendments, the proposed document would proceed to the township trustees, who would preside over a second public hearing at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the town hall. The trustees would then approve, table or reject the proposed conditional uses, enshrining them into Shalersville’s zoning code.
